HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/07/2013 - Regular Minutes - Historic Preservation CommitteeMINUTES OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMITTEE October 7, 2013 STATE OF TEXAS § § COUNTY OF BRAZOS § Present: Committee: Linda Harvell (chair) Pat Cleere Jerry Cooper Ann Hays Louis Hodges Gary Ives Joel Mitchell Libby Vastano City Staff: Jacob Morris, Historic Records Coordinator Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office, 1000 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors No visitors were in attendance. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Ken Rogers was noted as unexcused absent. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 5. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series, including update regarding specific efforts to secure sponsors for 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series. Committee discussed the Exploring History Lunch Series. The subcommittee distributed a summary of the meeting with the Senior Advisory Committee which occurred September 25th. Joel Mitchell and Jerry Cooper reported that they plan to follow up with potential speakers. Members noted that the deadline to have speakers arranged is November 15th, when the Spring Parks Guide materials are due. Committee discussed sponsorships. Linda Harvell reported that Marci Rogers indicated that she would contact past sponsors. Committee considered raising the cost of the luncheon from $5 to $7 per person. Committee made a motion that they would support consideration of a change in the luncheon price. Motion passed unanimously. Committee discussed the need for a more organized way to make change for attendees. Committee determined to discuss arranging a change drawer for the luncheon. 6. Possible action and discussion of 75th Anniversary related activities, including but not limited to, sponsorships, fundraising efforts, and the Homecoming event. Chair Harvell reported that preparations for the Bush Library exhibit were delayed due to the government shutdown. Union Pacific is in preparations to designate College Station as part of the Traintown USA program. Chair solicited ideas for entertainment at events, potential docents, and announced that docents and select volunteers would receive commemorative shirts for their efforts. Several members offered to act as docents. Chair announced that the Southwood venue may have inadequate capacity for the event, and committee is considering adding a tent, or a possible change of venue. Jerry Cooper reported that the Texas A&M Garden Club is doing a rededication ceremony for Carter Park on Friday, November 15, 11:00 am. 7. Discussion and possible action regarding committee mission and purpose, strategic planning and overall program assessment. Dialogue to address each individual HPC existing and potential initiative from this standpoint as well. Chair Harvell announced that she would be presenting Historic Preservation Committee initiatives to City Council, and committee members suggested she address website improvements, direction regarding the historic marker program, and general input and feedback from Council. 8. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program Committee discussed ways to reinvigorate the program, including patterning it after the “This Place Matters program. Oral History Transcription Project No report was presented College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano No report was presented Committee made no comments regarding item 11. 9. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities. Historic Record Coordinator distributed monthly summary to members. He reported that he would be leaving for a new position with the City of Palestine, and thanked Committee for all of their support and enthusiasm. Committee made a motion to recognize Jacob Morris for his efforts as Historic Records Coordinator. Motion passed unanimously. 10. Calendar Events Oct. 10, 2013 75th Anniversary Sub-Committee meeting, City Hall, 8:30 a.m. Oct 16, 2013 Exploring History Lunch Series, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 11:30 a.m. Speakers: Early Co-Eds at TAMU Roundtable Sponsor: CS Parks, Senior Services Nov. 4, 2013 HPC Regular meeting, Stephen C. Beachy Central Park office, 4:00 p.m. Nov. 7, 2013 75th Anniversary Sub-Committee meeting, City Hall, 8:30 a.m. Nov. 20, 2013 Exploring History Lunch Series, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 11:30 a.m. Speaker: Veterans’ Tribute Sponsor: Medicare Equipment Specialties 11. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members, which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia.  No action will be taken. Dr. Hodges presented and distributed a vintage dime storage folder, of the type commonly given out by banks at one point. 12. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. No items were suggested. 13. Adjournment MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:10 p.m. on Monday, October 7, 2013.
