Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:07 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office, 1000 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors Mike Luther introduced himself and stated his purpose to visit and listen. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Excused absences: Joel Mitchell and Libby Vastano had contacted committee and informed that they were unable to attend. Unexcused absence: M. D. Marshall. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes. 5. Chair Meeting Introduction Chair Harvell introduced the meeting, reporting that she and Gary Ives attended the Senior Advisory Committee meeting, stating that it was productive and may generate cooperation. 6. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities. Jacob Morris distributed a report, and summarized developments occurring over the previous month, including Project HOLD, partnerships, and volunteers. Jerry Cooper requested that Exploring History Luncheon attendance be reported with cumulative figures as well. Pat Cleere requested additional information regarding the Historic Marker program. 7. Presentation, possible action and discussion of 75th Anniversary related activities. Chair Harvell reported that 75th events were progressing. Union Pacific has pledged $10,000 to be the major sponsor. She then requested that members network and assist in securing additional sponsorship. Chair Harvell reported that the event has a Facebook page, entitled “College Station, Celebrate 75 Years.” The site has over 200 likes, and she encouraged members to like and promote the site when possible. Committee then discussed ways to promote the page, including posting through Santa’s Wonderland and Mybcs. Chair reported that Public Communications is working with KBTX and the Eagle. Jacob Morris reported that members can draft blogposts related to city history and the 75th event, and the city can edit and post them on their website. Gary Ives reported that he has contacted alumni groups and Homeowners’ Associations regarding the events. Chair Harvell expressed her intent to update City Council regarding activities and events during public meeting. Jerry Cooper summarized his research concerning the 1940 census, indicating that it would be useful for 75th exhibit content, as well as Project HOLD. 8. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2014 Exploring History Lunch Series Chair Harvell introduced discussion. Committee determined to discuss 2014 speakers and sponsors. Committee inquired about a change of venue. Marci Rogers stated that a tour and meeting at Lincoln Center could easily be scheduled to determine appropriateness of venue. Summer youth programs may be problematic. Southwood is a smaller venue, and may require an attendance cap. She stated that a verbal agreement with Aldersgate Church extends to December 2013. Marci Rogers reported that no sponsor has been found for May, and that although the Parks Department has sponsored three of the 2013 luncheons, they were only initially budgeted for one. No sponsor was yet been found for August. Committee members made suggestions for the November Veterans Luncheon, including Commandant Ramirez, and Rob Thornton 9. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program Committee determined to discuss the Historic Marker process at the next meeting- see item 11. Oral History Transcription Project No developments- see item 7 for related. Exploring History Lunch Series No new developments- see item 8 for related. 75th Anniversary See item 7 for related. College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano No developments. 10. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Committee discussed adding an agenda item to discuss the Historic Marker nomination process. 12. Adjournment MOTION: The Committee moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:19 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013.
