Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Linda Harvell at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2013 at the Stephen C. Beachy Central Park Office, 1000 Krenek Tap Road, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors There were no Citizen Comments. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. Committee discussed the importance regular meeting attendance and determined that the committee would send correspondence to any member with frequent absences as: a reminder to attend, notice of concern, and notification that attendance is crucial to effective operation of committee objectives. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes. MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the minutes with minor correction. 5. Chair Report Chair Harvell stated that the the major focus of the meeting would be the determination of speakers for the Exploring History Lunch Lectures for 2013. 6. Discussion of Committee goals and objectives to present to City Council. Harvell stated that she will present a report before city council that will outline current committee initiatives, accomplishments, and goals. She then intends to request feedback and direction from Council. 7. Report from HPC staff on Historic Records Coordinator Office activities. Jacob Morris summarized the activities provided in the agenda packet. He reported that two interns would be working in office this spring: Thomas Schott and Tim Green. He also summarized a few potential volunteers for HPC and 75th initiatives. 8. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program No major developments Oral History Transcription Project No major developments Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series Committee discussed the Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series. Committee discussed potential speakers and sponsors for 2013. An updated list of potential speakers and sponsors was provided: January Speaker: Dennis Davenport Sponsor: Isle at Watercrest February Speaker: Wayne Sadberry March Speaker: Sunny Nash April Speaker: Alston Thoms Sponsor: College Station Medical Center Senior Circle June Sponsor: Texas Trading Post September Sponsor: Waldenbrook Estates October: Sponsor: City of CS Parks and Rec. Senior Services Committee discussed other potential sponsors and speakers. Chair Harvell stressed that she would like to focus on popular speakers that could draw a crowd. Chair Harvell reported that she may be able to secure Red Cashion for August. Committee suggested a lecture about “If the Devil Had a Wife.” City staff cautioned against the topic, because of its contentious subject matter, and because the subject matter is concerned mainly with events in Orange, Texas, instead of College Station. Committee suggested additional speakers and topics: The Junction Boys. Singing Cadets. Parson’s Cavalry. 1st Coeds at Tamu. History of medical care in CS. Italian immigration and community in B-CS. For October- Haunted College Station. Fort Tenoxtitlan. The Film: We’ve Never Been Licked. Roundtable discussions of former Mayors, veterans, or other topics. Maryann Dixon at TAMU Press was suggested as a potential source of speakers and topics. 75th Anniversary Linda Harvell reported that the 75th Anniversary Committee was always in need of volunteers. She summarized activities including Bush Library Exhibit, opening festivities, and promotional efforts. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. There were no future agenda items. 11. Adjournment MOTION: Upon a motion made by Ann Hays and a second by Jerry Cooper, the Committee voted unanimously to adjourn the meeting at 5:28 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013.
