Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Susan Irza at 4:08 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012 in the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors There were no Citizen Comments. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. The Committee voted unanimously to excuse the absence of M.D. Marshall. 4. Possible action and discussion of previous minutes: MOTION: The Committee voted unanimously to approve the May 7, 2012 minutes. 5. Reminder to HPC members with expiring terms to reapply, in order to be considered by City Council for reappointment. Deadline is June 29, 2012. Chairperson Susan Irza reminded members that Committee appointments are due before June 29, 2012. 6. Report from HPC staff on activities -- Jacob Morris. Jacob Morris reported activities for the month of May. He reported that all 3 interns have begun training for the summer. They have begun learning Project HOLD and have already accomplished a substantial amount of oral history transcription. Morris submitted a handout that summarized the month’s data. 7. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: Historic Marker Program – M.D. Marshall M. D. Marshall had an excused absence and did not report. Oral History Transcription Project – Lou Hodges Dr. Hodges reported that some progress has been made, but was ongoing. Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series – Susan Irza, Marci Rodgers, Ann Hays, Jerry Cooper Ann Hays reported that all of the Lecture Series times for 2013 are reserved. She announced that there will be a 2013 lecture series meeting on June 12, at 11:30 a.m. Susan Irza requested volunteers to give introductions for the September through November lectures. Jerry Cooper, Libby Vastano, and Linda Harvell each volunteered to give an introduction. Linda Harvell suggested that the 2013 lunch lectures could be thematically connected to each decade of City of College Station history, in order to fit with 75th Anniversary events and publicity to be held throughout that year. Concerns were expressed that it may be difficult to find quality and willing speakers as well as logistic problems coordinating the efforts. Jerry Cooper suggested that it may be possible to add some aspect to each lecture that would help publicize, regardless of lecture content. The attendance for the May lecture was 69 total, with 61 paid and 2 utilizing shuttle service. 75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Patricia Cleere, Jerry Cooper, Susan Irza The chair of the 75th Anniversary sub-committee, Linda Harvell, reported that much of the 75th Anniversary efforts were holding until the Texas A&M athletic schedule is finalized. She reported pledges for loan of potential exhibit materials were now being accepted, and the major planned activities still consist of an event at Veteran’s Park and an exhibit at the Bush Library. College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano, Susan Irza Libby Vastano reported that she has conducted several interviews, and was in the process of scheduling more upcoming interviews. Several names were mentioned to generate future interviews, includingWinnie Garner, John Crompton , Ed Higgins, the Heatons, and “Swicky” Anderson. 8. Presentation and discussion of historic items presented by committee members. Lou Hodges presented a 1871 image from Harper’s Weekly depicting a swing set located in Central Park. Jerry Cooper presented a  map of houses on the A&M in 1938 which has Dr. Paul van Riper's notes about each one of the 90 houses; i.e.: date constructed, occupants who lived in them up to about 1925, date they were sold and moved off campus. 9. Presentation, possible action and discussion on future agenda items. No future agenda items were proposed. 11. Adjournment MOTION: Upon a motion made by Libby Vastano and a second by Ann Hays, the Committee voted unanimously, to adjourn the meeting at 5:06 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012.
