Alterations No alterations have been made to the house since 1980 when Mr. and Mrs. Higgins purchased it. We have no information regarding what previous owners may have done to the house. B. Prominent Historical Figures In the mid-1900's when a professor at Texas A&M University owned the house, he hosted the Nobel Prize winner for economics, Dr. Milton Friedman of the University of Chicago, and provided him overnight lodging. C. Property Ownership Charles and Frances Schwartz (?-1896) W.M. Sparks, J.E. Angell, and H.E. Burgess (1896-?) Dr. L.K. Tanzler (1938-?) Smith family (?) William Bertiger and LaifSwanson (?-1980) Edwin and Page Higgins (1980-present) D. Tenant History Dr. L.K. Tanzler (1938-?) Smith family (?) Edwin and Page Higgins (1980-present) E. Narrative History The original deed to the property, as far as we could tell, is dated 1896. At that time, the property was sold by Charles and Frances Schwartz to W.M. Sparks, J.E. Angell, and H.E. Burgess. The land surrounding the site was developed by Herschel Burgess into a residential area called the Oakwood Addition in 1932. Deed restrictions were created in 1932 which, among other things, banned the use of outdoor toilets, allowed only white people to own or rent the property, and did not allow the raising oflivestock on the property. Obviously at least one of these restrictions has changed since then. The house was originally sold in 1938 to Dr. L.K. Tanzler of College Station for around $7,000. William Bertiger and Laif Swanson sold the home to the current residents, the Higgins, for about $50,000 around 1980. F. Photographs See attached. G. Additional Information Besides age, what makes this house historic is also the materials with which it was built. The builders used petrified wood found thirty-five miles away in the construction of the house. The house has two floors, four bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms. The house has two fireplaces with stone chimneys. The current owner, Mr. Edwin Higgins, was the pilot of a B-17 bomber that flew a raid over Berlin near the end of World War II. Mr. Higgins is still flies recreationally and works part time in the Kleberg Building at Texas A&M University. H.
