Narrative History Life affords me no greater pleasure as to stand here and bring to you the history ofthe greatest living organism on earth, the church. In the year of 1944, a small group of women met and organized a bible band in the home of Sister Gertrude Gilbert. Continuing nightly in devotion and fellowship led by sisters: Symataha Cooper, Catherine Taylor, Emma Johnson, Alice Butler, Lee Etta Nix, Lula Wyatt, Betty Banks, Bernice Thomas, Bretha Payton, Edna Payton, Ada Watson, Melinda Barrington, Olivia Seaton, Lucy Bailey, Mable Watson, Florence Caldwell, Bro. Albert Seaton and Bro. John Bailey. Later joined by the Reverend W.H. Gamer of Houston, Texas, who expressed a need as a possibility of a church in this community. In the year of 1945, on the third Sunday in November with the Rev. W.H. Gamer in charge, the church was organized in the home of Sister Augusta Jackson at 609 Preston. Members present were eleven namely: Symatha Cooper, Emma Johnson, Lee Etta Nix, Bretha Payton, Edna Payton, Alice Butler, Augusta Jackson, Florence Caldwell, Olivia and Albert Seaton. Other ministers present were Rev. H.Y. Bolden and Rev. S.E. Diggs. The first pastor called was Rev. G.L. Howard. Under his leadership, three quarters of an acre of land and three houses were purchased for a church building at 706 Churchill Street, then known as the Tom Smith Track for the amount of$1500.00. The city of College Station issued three permits to three people as solicitors for the building fund to build a church, namely: Sister Ada Watson, Sister Symatha Cooper and Bro. Ed Harris. During which the church was named the College Hills Missionary Baptist Church, as it is known today. New members were added and three deacons were ordained: Bro. Albert Seaton, Bro. John Bailey, and Bro. Henry Cooper. The major auxiliaries were organized, namely: Sunday school, BTU, and Mission Society. Rev. Howard served well for two years. In the year of 1947, the Rev. Henry Wilson was called as pastor. Under his leadership and hard work, both the church and the community greatly benefited. More new members were added and deacons ordained, namely: Bro. Sam Kearney, Bro. Josh Kearney, Bro. Clifton Harris, Bro. Joe Payton, and Bro. Pearly Payton. The second church was complete. Rev. Wilson served well until he was called from labor to reward. In the year of 1953, in September, the Rev. Robert L. Castle III, the third pastor, was called. Under his leadership, the church grew spiritually, numerically, and financially. Within six months the total debts owed on the church were liquidated and plans for a modem church were in the making. Two deacons were ordained: Bro. K.K. Wells and Bro. Tommy Preston. The first son in the ministry born to the College Hills Baptist Church was Rev. K.K. Wells at Rev. Castle's departure. $3088.61 was left in the building fund. Rev. Castle served well for five years. In the year of 1957, the Rev. Marshall H. Harris, the fourth and present pastor was called. Under his leadership the third and fourth churches were built. Three more sons in the ministry were born to the church: Rev. Clayborn Whitfield, Rev. James Grayer, and Rev. Milton Wells. Hamilton having been called into the ministry only thirty days after being ordained as a deacon. In the year of 1987, more new members added and two deacons were ordained: Bro. The sun has risen, and what we could not see' at dawn, we can now see because we have plenty light. The Lord is here among us, in the form of the Holy Spirit. He will give us the light of understanding that we may do his work, because it is, the dawn of a new day. Reverend M. H. Harris 2
