Historic Preservation Committee
Monday, January 6, 2019 – 4:00 pm

The City Council may or may not attend the Historic Preservation Committee Regular Meeting.

Called to order and announced a Quorum at 4 p.m. Gerald Burgner
Marilyn Randall, Shirley Dupriest, and David Fujimoto all had absence requests. Lou Hodges made a motion to approve. Sherry Frisk second the motion. The vote was called, all were in
favor, and the motion was passed unanimously.
Julie Schultz, made a motion to approve the December minutes. Sherry Frisk, second the motion. The vote was called, all were in favor, and the motion was passed unanimously.
There were not any visitors
Presentation, discussion, and possible action on the proposal for a Texas Historical Marker for Parkland Dedication in the City of College Station
CS Historical Project: Nothing to report
Cemetery Project: Sherry Frisk heard back from Austin and they will let her know this month about receiving the designation for Salem and Shiloh. She is also close to finishing the application
for the CS Cemetery. She has been working with David Schmitz and Henry Mayo on the project and how the cemetery expands and decreases. Sherry Frisk has been researching the sections
to make sure all her information is correct.
Historic Marker Program: Nothing to report for the program. Shirley Dupriest spoke with Gerald Burgner regarding a gentleman who emailed her. The citizen stated that he has three concrete
historic street markers, and wanted to know if HPC wanted them. These markers are city property, depending on the condition these markers are in will determine their placement. All
members were in agreeance that HPC would accept the markers.
CS Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives: Nothing to report
Exploring History Lunch Series: Gerald Burgner spoke with Marilyn Randall who stated there are speakers for the lunch through April of 2020. The next speaker will attend the lunch on
January 15th.
Project Hold Report: Tiffany Gonzalez has started working on PR projects such as the newsletter. She has also been reaching out to organizations in the city for donations on papers to
use. The Evening Garden Club has agreed to donate papers and the Arts Council is searching. Tiffany has obtained documents and pictures from Parks & Recreation on previous events. She
has been continuing with her same duties, such as scanning in the last book. There was a discussion about the project hold website and some technical issues with the links.
HPC Website: Nothing to report.
Historical Home Awareness: William Wright has researched a few homes and will do more research soon.
Historic Business Designation: William Wright discussed putting together a list of potential businesses that have been in business for over 25 years and would be eligible for a historic
business designation marker. His yearlong goal is to have a good list and businesses that would apply for this marker. Also, to possibly speak about these businesses on the “All up
in your business” podcast, or one like it. Julie Schultz suggested William Wright speak with Scott DeLucia on this topic. After setting up the application and there are 3-5 applicants
William Wright may write a summary of the businesses that are receiving this designation. These would hopefully be published in local newsletters or papers.
Historic Award: Julie Schultz is going to speak with the City of Bryan Downtown offices to see what their process and what criteria they look for with the Historic Awards. She will conduct
more research on the topic and bring her findings to February’s meeting.
Documentary for COCS: David Fujimoto was absent and will report on this topic at the next meeting in February.
Wish List:
Julie Schultz inquired about obtaining a portable scanner so that you could scan documents at your current location.
Sherry Frisk inquired about the purchase for the 3 state cemetery markers that are priced around $2000 apiece.
Gerald Burgner stated on February 23rd-25th in Waco, TX there will be a Cultural Preservation Workshop. Lou Hodges spoke about the Boonville Cemetery Wild Flower Festival in March, he
will present more information in February’s meeting.
Report by Parks Director – David Schmitz discussed the newly printed book called, “City Stories – College Station a Recent History”. 200 copies were printed including the 20 that Style
Craft ordered to meet the 200 copy break. The books were printed at $20 a book. David Schmitz brought a complimentary copy for the HPC Committee. There will also be copies for City
Council and the Library. They would like to have this book available for sale, and David Schmitz will be speaking with the City Manager for approval. There will be a discussion on pricing
for the book, whether the price will be $20 or a little more. On January 9th there will be a council meeting to appoint or re-appoint HPC committee members.
There were no new presentations or discussions for future agenda items.
Lou Hodges presented a vintage rolling grasshopper toy from his childhood after WWII.
Motion made to adjourn by Sherry Frisk, second by, Lou Hodges and carried by unanimous vote at 4:46 PM
