HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/25/2018 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting June 25, 2018 Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 9:30 a.m. Minutes Members Present: Jean Adams, Margaret Carmichael, Frank Duchmasclo, Sherry Erwin, Anna Hester, Craig McSpadden, Arlene Petroski, Barbara Pratt, Patricia VanderBoom, Darla VanFickell and Christine Williams Staff Present: Katy Peterson Visitors Present: Maxey Riggs I. Vice-Chairman Barbara Pratt called the meeting to order at 9:30 am. II. Hear visitors: Mr. Maxey Riggs introduced himself and told the committee that he was very service oriented. He wants to help the seniors in our community and is very interested in what the committee is doing. Frank Duchmasclo asked him if he was interested in serving on the Senior Advisory Committee. Mr. Riggs said that he had already completed the SAC application and submitted it. III. Approval of minutes from meeting held on May 21, 2018: Frank Duchmasclo made a motion to approve the minutes with 2 corrections. One correction was to change the name Jeff Banks to Jeff Capps, the second correction was to change the meeting date from July 30th to June 25th. Christine Williams seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Report and possible discussion by Vice-Chairman Barbara Pratt on Parks and Recreation Board Meeting and Senior Circle at the College Station Medical Center: Barbara reported that she had spoken with Kelly Kelbly regarding possible changes to Thomas Pool. She said they are looking at updating and changing the facility due to budget concerns, safety concerns, facility maintenance and an audit. Barbara also reported on the Arts Council. She said they are right on target to vacate the Meyers Building in September. Kelly Kelbly said that they were completing the design plans now and still making some small changes and tweaks. Kelly will share the facility floor plans with the Senior Advisory Committee once the design and plans are complete. Barbara also reported on the Senior Circle. She had met with Christine McDonald and the last official day for Senior Circle was June 8th. Christine McDonald is still working part -time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays. There will be a Texercise class on the 4th floor auditorium in July and a Fit & Strong Class City of College Station Page 2 of 2 in September that will be open to the community and seniors. Pat VanderBoom reported that a group called Amigos Del Valle was meeting in Bryan at St. Anthony’s Parrish. It is a national group that promotes senior activities for Hispanics. They are not governed by Parks & Recreation. She also reported that the City of Bryan is renovating the old Phillips building for a senior center. Pat reported that the Hand & Foot Canasta Senior Circle Group was going to start playing here at SWCC starting on July 3rd. Katy has ordered the card shufflers and decks of new cards. Pat has obtained the boxes for the 5 deck card sets. Katy asked committee members to reach out and make them all feel welcome. Frank Duchmasclo made a motion to commend Don Hellregriel with a letter signed by all the Senior Advisory Committee members on the outstanding job he did in promoting the Meyers Center and all of his efforts in getting the building naming back on the agenda. Margaret Carmichael seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Frank asked Katy to write the letter and present it at the next SAC meeting for signatures. V. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events: Katy Peterson reported on activities and special events for June and July. • June 14th: New Class Beginning Tap Dance taught by Sue Engbrock every Thurs 1:30-2:30 p.m. • July 6: Martial Arts has been moved to Friday’s for the month of July • July 4: SWCC Closed • July 2-6 LRC Closed • July every Tues & Wed.: 8:30a.m. Indoor Walking Group led by Susan Lehr • July 18: Exploring History Luncheon – “Edith’s War” by Peter Witt • July 3: Forevercise @ LRC Every Tuesday 10 – 11:30 a.m. • July 31: Potluck & Pizza Social • July 19: Summer Dance • July 26-29: SWCC & LRC Closed for Games of Texas VI. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next Meeting: July 30, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. • Letter to Don Hellregriel VII. Adjourn: Frank Duchmasclo made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Darla VanFickell seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 am.
