Call to Order and Announce a Quorum is Present With a quorum present, the Historic Preservation Committee was called to order by Chair Susan Irza at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012 in the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, Room 103, College Station, Texas 77842. 2. Hear Visitors There were no Citizen Comments. 3. Possible action and discussion on absence requests. No action was needed. 4. Introduction of Historical Records Coordinator. Jacob Morris, Historical Records Coordinator, introduced himself and stated he is pleased to be working with the Historical Preservation Committee; one doesn’t see this type of investment in other municipalities. He reported he is getting settled in, developing processes and procedures, and looking forward to letting the community know of the City’s investment in historic preservation. RM010912 Minutes Page 2 The committee members introduced themselves and welcomed Mr. Morris. 5. Possible action and discussion of minutes for: • November 7, 2011 MOTION: Upon a motion made by Pat Cleere and a second by Libby Vastano, the Committee voted seven (7) for and none (0) opposed, with Hillary Jessup not yet present, to approve the minutes as submitted. The motion carried unanimously. 6. Presentation, possible action, and discussion on Sunset Advisory Commission survey. Chair Irza encouraged each committee member to complete and submit the Sunset Advisory Commission survey to Shelley Major, liaison to the Sunset Advisory Commission. 7. Presentation, possible action, and discussion on a budget amendment request to the City Council. MOTION: Upon a motion made by Jerry Cooper and a second by Ann Hays, the Committee voted eight (8) for and none (0) opposed, to ratify the budget amendment request already submitted for an additional $5,000 for the writing and compilation of the history book. The motion carried unanimously. 8. Presentation, possible action, and discussion on requirements for business historical makers. This item was postponed until such time as M.D. Marshall can be present. 9. Presentation, possible action, and discussion on the College Station history book project. Bill Harper distributed a list of items considered for inclusion in the history book and asked for any other suggestions. 10. Update and report on participation in Brazos Valley Worldfest. Lou Hodges passed around some pictures of the event and reported they had a good crowd at the booth. Passports were stamped with a “boot”, and they displayed the six flags and the currencies for each. Roger the Bear was also present. 11. Review, possible action, and discussion regarding the following sub-committees: • Historic Marker Program – M.D. Marshall • Oral History Transcription Project – Lou Hodges • Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series – Susan Irza, Marci Rodgers, Ann Hayes • Landmark Commission (Liaison) – Susan Irza • 75th Anniversary – Linda Harvell, Patricia Cleere, Jerry Cooper, Susan Irza RM010912 Minutes Page 3 • College Station Timeline & College Station History Book Advisor – Jerry Cooper • College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives – Libby Vastano, Susan Irza Susan Irza briefly reported on the Exploring History Lunch Lecture Series and welcomed Ann Hays as a sub-committee member. Susan Irza reported the Landmark Commission met and voted to have only one meeting per year. Linda Harvell reported the 75th Anniversary Committee will meet on January 12. They are successfully expanding their committee base. They have begun work on the budget and fundraising efforts. They have not set the date for the celebration because they are waiting on the 2013 football schedule to avoid any conflicts. Libby Vastano reported on the College Station Oral History Interviews & Educational Initiatives. She would like to include past members of the school board in the oral history collection. Ms. Irza reported the interviews with all previous mayors have been completed. 12. Presentation and discussion of historical items presented by committee members which may include historical books, pictures, artifacts, scrapbooks, or other memorabilia. No action will be taken. Lou Hodges distributed stereo photos from the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, the first official World’s Fair in the United States. Ms. Irza presented and recommended a book, “Kyle Tough: The Saga of Texas A&M’s Rise to Power in Athletics and Agriculture, 1902-1956” by Barbara Donalson. 13. Chair Irza reported that she, Bill Harper, and Glen Davis will be speaking at the East Texas Historical Association Spring Meeting on February 17-18. The session is titled: “Doing History in the Brazos Valley”. Chair Irza reported the African American History Association will be honoring Ann Boykin on January 28. 14. Discussion and possible action on future agenda items. Linda Harvell requested a future agenda item to consider a formal resolution to the City Council requesting the implementation of guidelines such as those for the Hyde Park Preservation Plan in Austin, Texas. She is concerned the City is allowing the destruction of areas in the historic neighborhoods for cheap student housing, and we are losing long-time residents from these neighborhoods. She stated the City needs to start trying to save the neighborhoods. 15. Adjournment MOTION: Upon a motion made by Ann Hays and a second by Lou Hodges, the Committee voted six (6) for and none (0) opposed, with Pat Cleere and Linda Harvell not present, to adjourn the meeting at 5:40 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012.
