The lead evaluator who examined our department’s policies, procedures, and overall functionality was a parks director from Florida. She repeatedly complimented our staff’s longevity, teamwork, and communication. As we discussed the department’s future, she asked how we would continue to prosper with so many outstanding employees retiring. In 2017, we’ve had three employees retire from the department who had a combined 73 years of experience, knowledge, and service to our community and visitors from across the nation. To understand the implications, allow me to define the term servant since that’s what these individuals exemplified: Servant (noun): a person who performs duties for others; a devoted and helpful follower or supporter. In the last three decades, these three individuals served tirelessly in all realms of Parks and Recreation. They were dedicated and helpful to all who graced our facilities, parks, and programs. Perhaps even more valuable was their faithful support of our staff. Because of their mentoring, work ethic and service, their legacy will live on through the strong foundations they built in their work groups and facilities. Many tears were shed when they announced their retirements and again when they actually made their exits. Parks and recreation is not merely a job for us -- It is a family and a way of life. Our priority is to make our community an amazing place to live and visit while honoring others who have served. Thank you to Vera Vowell Solis, Lance Jackson, Frank Thompson, and all who came before you. The tireless leadership you demonstrated will make us great forever on! Kelly Kelbly Parks & Recreation Assistant Director City of College Station 6 SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS We welcome people of all ability levels to enjoy and participate in our wide variety of quality programs and services. Wood, Tourism Manager As the home of the Texas A&M Aggies, College Station commonly is referred to as Aggieland. Thanks to the recent athletic tourism boom, another nickname may become just as appropriate: the Center of Texas Sports. In July 2017, SportsEvents magazine named Veterans Park as one of the top 10 multi-use facilities in the country for exceeding expectations and offering a memorable experience. That didn’t happen by chance. The fact that our peers and event participants selected Veterans Park & Athletic Complex shows that we have established a winning formula that will continue to pay dividends well beyond the hundreds of events we’ve hosted in recent years. College Station’s central location in the Lone Star State, along with its premier sports venues, has made it a preferred site for a variety of state, regional and national championship events. What makes it all work is the dynamic community partnerships we’ve forged. Our assets include not only the cities of College Station and Bryan but also Texas A&M University. Local organizations and citizen-run groups also play a vital role and have helped transform our sports tourism landscape. The level of service our parks employees provide, along with the quality of maintenance by our parks and recreation staff, helps set College Station and Veterans Park & Athletic Complex apart. This year alone, we’ve scheduled 30 events that are expected to attract some 35,000 participants. That number doesn’t even include the family members and friends who will come along to watch. Sports tourism is a highly competitive industry, and we continually work to enhance the quality of our services. With plans to add two more synthetic fields with lights – giving us 13 multi-purpose rectangle fields (four synthetic) and five softball fields – we’ll be able to attract more and larger events in the future. - - - 18 RENTAL DETAILS FIELDS Brian Bachmann Community Park 6 baseball and 2 athletic Wayne Smith Athletic Complex 3 baseball Stephen C. Challenger Sports provides that opportunity. The programs are designed to build confidence and self-esteem for those with special needs in a fun, positive environment. Participants learn skills and challenge themselves in a program tailored specifically to their needs. They are paired with volunteers from Project Sunshine, whose goal is “to build friendships while bringing smiles to children’s faces.” Participants sometimes stay in the program for many years, developing lasting friendships with fellow participants, staff and Project Sunshine volunteers. The high-energy game is considered one of the healthiest activities for all ages and delivers physical, mental and emotional benefits. Here are five reasons why you should incorporate tennis as a regular recreation activity: 1. It engages your mind and body at the same time. The game’s tactical aspects keep your mind occupied while your body gets a great workout. 2. The constant movement and action burn calories, build muscle, increase bone strength, improve flexibility, fine-tune coordination, and enhance overall health and fitness. In one hour, you can burn 600 calories. 3. It’s great for mental health since it requires alertness, tactical thinking and problem-solving. Evidence suggests it may also generate new connections between nerves, promoting a lifetime of continued brain development. 4. It’s a social sport that encourages interaction and communication and is an excellent way to meet friends and competitors. It also gives families an opportunity to play, exercise, and have fun together. 5. You can play it from the youngest ages through your later years. College Station Parks and Recreation offers multiple programs for you to become an active tennis player. You can learn the basics of the game, sharpen and improve your skills, or play matches against competitors through tennis lessons and our High Performance Tennis Academy (see page 19). We also have five community and neighborhood parks that include a total of 14 lighted tennis courts for recreational use. Unfortunately, not everyone can participate in recreational sports in the way typically offered through sports leagues. Children and adults with special needs are often left out of sports programming. The City of College Station believes everyone should experience the compelling benefits of recreational sports, regardless of physical or developmental challenges. We provide the environment and allow the dynamics of sports handle the rest.
