May 23, 2016 10:00 a.m. MINUTES Members Present: Jean Adams, Carol Blaschke, Margaret Carmichael, Bryana Childers, Jerry Crockett, Russell Kohel, Jeanne Machrowicz, June Morris, Arlene Petroski, Mickey Stokes, Darla VanFickell, Janet Wood and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Norma Teetes and Christine Williams Visitors Present: Gale Norman Staff Present: David Schmitz, Kelly Kelbly, Kelli Nesbitt and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by Jerry Crockett, Chairman II. Hear Visitors : Gale Norman introduced herself as a visitor who was there to listen. III. Approval of minutes from meeting held on April 25, 2016: Mickey St okes made a motion to approve the minutes. Darla VanFickell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion on City of College Station webpage for seniors: Kelli Nesbitt, Marketing Coordinator for the Parks and Recreation Department disp layed the City of College Station Senior webpage. Russell Kohel spoke on the format and wording of the page and offered suggestions to create a more senior friendly webpage. His suggestions included inserting a picture of Southwood Community Center and Lincoln Center next to the description along with a map and directions. He would also like to see more pictures of activities and programs offered at the centers. Mr. Kohel recommended that the monthly calendar be available on the senior webpage and remov e programs and special events that are not current. Mr. Kohel suggested that a sub -committee be created and made up of three members to work on the webpage. Kelli Nesbitt agreed to change and update what she could, but that she was limited. Jerry Crockett asked if the committee could see a report on how many hits the webpage receives and Kelli Nesbitt said that she could provide that information. The sub -committee will be considered at the next meeting. City of College Station Page 2 of 2 V. Update on Goals for 2016 -2017: Mickey Stokes reported that three members had recently toured the newly opened Senior Center in Brenham. Her report stated that the center is 27,000 square feet and was built with private donations along with some help from United Way. Mickey shared photographs of the center. Kelly Kelbly reported that staff had met with Jeff Bulla, Architect with PGAL on May 18, 2016 to discuss square footage of the senior/community center. Kelly reported that once preliminary conceptual designs were available the Senior Advisory Committee would have an opportunity for input. The design with cost estimates will be presented to city council to receive direction. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events : (report attached) • Marci Rodgers reported on the Seniors Expo held on May 18, 2016 at the Brazos County Expo Center and thanked all the members who volunteered to help work the booth and as greeters. Approximately 1800 attended the Expo. • The J une calendar was discussed and members were encouraged to attend a seminar titled “Food Safety 101” on June 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Southwood. The program will be presented by USDA Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety, Alfred Almanza and Public Affairs Specialist Food Safety Education Staff, Kristina Beaugh, both from Washington D.C. • An Ice Cream Social will be held on June 23, 2016 from 2-3 p.m. at Southwood with the College Station Fire Department VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Next meeting: June 27, 2016 • Discuss publicizing programs in the print media VIII.
