HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/29/2013 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, July 29, 2013 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Jerry Markowich, Pearl Robertson, Ron Silvia and Pat Vanderboom Members Absent: Susan McGrail, Robert Meyer and Mabelene Robinson Visitors Present: Gary Ives Staff Present: Marci Rodgers I. Call to order The meeting was called to order by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman, at 10:05am II. Welcome and hear visitors Gary Ives a member of the Historic Preservation Committee attended the meeting as a visitor. Mr. Ives reported on the 75th Reunion Event that is planned at Southwood Community Center on Friday, November 15th and tickets for a BBQ dinner are for sale. Also, on Saturday, November 16th at the George Bush Library the exhibit opens along with an antique car show and cake will be served to the community. The Senior Advisory Committee is being asked to help spread the word on the event. Mr. Ives also announced that he will be seeking election on the College Station City Council. III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on June 24, 2013 Ron Silvia made the motion to approve the minutes. Jerry Markowich seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning College Station Senior Games Jon Denton reported on the Senior Games event scheduled for August 15-18, 2013. Members from the Senior Advisory Committee are invited to attend the social for the games held at Southwood Community Center on Friday, August 16, 2013 from 6:00-8:00pm. One guest is invited to join each member of the Senior Advisory committee. Packet pick-up for the athletes will be held at Southwood on Thursday, August 15 – Friday, August 16th. Jon Denton also mentioned the Wall Street Journal featured an article on “Pickelball” which is one of the events offered at the Senior Games. Registration closes on August 2, 2013. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub- committee report regarding upcoming programs and events (report attached) Pat Vanderboom reported that Joanna Yeager, Suzanne Shepherd , Pearl Roberston and Pat Vanderboom met with Dana Albrecht and Marci Rodgers on July 9th at Southwood Community Center. Members received a copy of the August calendar. Pat Vanderboom reported that programs were also discussed for September through December. The program sub-committee discussed meeting quarterly or as needed due to the fact that calendars for fall are in place. Mr. Duchmasclo thanked the members of the sub-committee for their hard work on the monthly calendars. VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning report from Chairman, Frank Duchmasclo Frank Duchmasclo met with David Schmitz on July 2, 2013. They discussed the goals of the Senior Advisory Committee. • Signage – Mr. Duchmasclo inquired about signage that had been discussed last spring providing information designating when and where “Seniors Meet”. A request was made for signage to be located near the entrance to Brian Bachmann Community Park. Mr. Schmitz agreed that it had been a long time and he would look into it. • Southwood Community Center Senior Hours – Mr. Duchmasclo discussed with Mr. Schmitz that a group was meeting at the center at the same time the Senior Advisory Committee was scheduled to meet and agreed that seniors had priority use of the facility from 8:00am - 3:00pm on weekdays as directed from City Council. • Increase in senior participation figures- with the increase in population and senior programs, Mr. Duchmasclo and Mr. Schmitz discussed the need for a new building to meet the needs of the senior population. They discussed the idea of a new recreation center to serve the community with a place for seniors to meet within the facility. The next bond election could be in 2015 and support from the Senior Advisory Committee is needed. VII. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2013. No updates at this time. VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) Marci Rodgers reported on June participation figures. Upcoming events include free computer classes in the fall, Senior Fall Fest and a session on social media at the next computer club meeting on August 7th, Senior Games, Casino Days and luncheon and a dance in August. The Fall Activity Guide should be available in late August and includes all activities offered by the Parks and Recreation Department for September through December. There is a section just for senior programs. IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Media coverage for Line Dancing X.
