HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/24/2013 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, June 24, 2013 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich, Robert Meyer, Pearl Robertson, Mabelene Robinson, Ron Silvia and Pat VanderBoom Staff Present: Peter Lamont and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 10:00am II. Welcome and hear visitors No visitors present III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on May 20, 2013 Jerry Markowich made the motion to approve the minutes. Ron Silvia seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning College Station Senior Games (Report Attached) Jon Denton reported that online registration for the games is now available. Participants may also register in person at the Parks and Recreation office. Southwood Community Center will serve as the event headquarters and packet pick- up. Senior Advisory committee members are invited to attend the athlete’s reception on Friday, August 16th starting at 6:00pm at Southwood Community Center. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub- committee report regarding upcoming programs and events (Report Attached) Pat VanderBoom reported that Joanna Yeager, Bob Meyer, Suzanne Sheppard, Dana Albrecht, Marci Rodgers and Pat VanderBoom met on June 18th. An update was given for June programs and the July calendar was discussed. Highlights for July include: AARP Driver Safety Class, Free Lecture offered for seniors on tips for their personal and financial safety, movie with grandchildren at Southwood and snow cones and popcorn will be served and a special event with the College Station Police Department discussing safety issues for senior adults with ice cold watermelon. VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning patio furniture for Southwood Community Center Pat VanderBoom reported to the committee that the sub-committee discussed purchasing outdoor furniture with grant money received from SAM’S Club. The committee discussed possible locations for the furniture as well as security and durability. Peter Lamont suggested meeting with staff for further discussion. No action taken. VII. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2013. The committee would like to have an update on the signage for the Brian Bachmann Park. Jerry Markowich would like to see a list of available meeting facilities. VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) Marci Rodgers reported that The Senior Expo had approximately 1800 seniors attend. Members were advised about upcoming programs including a concert on Wednesday, June 26th and Ice Cream Social on Thursday, June 27th with College Station Fire Department. July calendars will be available soon. IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. The committee requested the following items be included on the July 29, 2013 agenda: • College Station Senior Games • Meeting Facilities • Senior Dances X. Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 10:47am
