HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/25/2013 - Regular Agenda - Senior Advisory Committee (3) College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, February 25, 2013 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Mary Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Ann Hays, Susan McGrail, Robert Meyer, Mabelene Robinson, Ron Silvia and Pat Vanderboom Members Absent: Frank Duchmasclo, Jerry Markowich and Pearl Robertson Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order The meeting was called to order by Ann Hays, acting Chairman, at 10:00am II. Welcome and hear visitors No visitors were present III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on January 28, 2013 Ron Silvia made the motion to approve the minutes. Robert Meyer seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning Council decision to move Board and Committee Appointments to January Marci Rodgers reported that the City Council has moved all board and commission appointments to January, in order to closely follow the new election schedule in November. Members are being asked to extend their terms on the Senior Advisory Committee to end December, 2013 for those eligible. The committee asked that each member receive information on terms served. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning update on signage for Brian Bachmann Community Park- Amy Atkins, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation Amy Atkins was unable to attend due to a conflict with a department meeting and Marci Rodgers distributed information on “way finding” signage being considered for the Brian Bachmann Community Park. The committee would like to have Ms. Atkins attend the March meeting. VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub- committee report regarding upcoming programs and events Mabelene Robinson, Pat Vanderboom, Robert Meyer, Pearl Robertson and Joanna Yeager attended the program sub-committee meeting held on February 12th. The March calendar was presented to the committee. Pat Vanderboom discussed some of the highlights for March. A health fair will be held at Southwood Community Center for seniors on March 27th from 9:00 – 12:00 noon sponsored by Blinn nursing students. Marci Rodgers reported that Southwood Community Center would remain open for senior programs during Spring Break, March 11-15th. The next program sub-committee meeting will be held at 9:30 am on March 12th. VII. Discussion and possible action concerning the Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2012 and 2013. Jon Denton reminded the committee that the 2013 goals had not been approved by the committee. Members will be mailed the revised goals along with next month’s agenda and minutes. The committee will vote to approve the goals at the March 25th meeting. VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) • Seniors Expo The 12th Annual Seniors Expo will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Brazos Center from 9:00 – 3:00 pm. Committee members will assist with the Senior Services booth at the Expo by distributing information and giveaways. • College Station Senior Games The games are scheduled for May 23 – 26, 2013. Southwood Community Center will serve as the headquarters for the event. Members of the Committee will be needed to assist participants as they arrive for packet pick-up and provide general information and directions as needed to venues. IX. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Approval of 2013 Goals • Amy Atkins to discuss directional signage at Brian Bachmann Community Park X.
