HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/28/2013 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee (3) College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, October 28, 2013 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd Minutes Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Susan McGrail, Jerry Markowich, Ron Silvia and Pat VanderBoom Members Absent: Pearl Robertson and Mabelene Robinson I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:00am by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman. Mr. Duchmasclo asked the committee for a minute of silence to remember Bob Meyer who recently passed away. II. Welcome and hear visitors No visitors present III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on September 30, 2013 Jon Denton noted a correction to the minutes. Under Item V. Presentation, possible action and discussion on 75th Celebration - the date should read November 16th for the opening of the Special Exhibit at the George Bush Library. Jerry Markowich made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Margaret Carmichael seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2013. (copy attached) The committee reviewed an updated copy of the goals for 2013. The committee discussed goal 3 - f) Implement “Senior Friendly Business” recognition program in the community. The program was created in 2005 by the Senior Advisory Committee, but has not been active in several years. The committee suggested that the program become active again and that those businesses awarded “Senior Friendly” would be listed on the monitor in the lobby of Southwood Community Center and recognized at the holiday open house in December. Also, with the recent loss of Robert Meyer, the committee discussed ways to recognize those members who have been instrumental in the creation of the Senior Programs offered by the College Station Parks and Recreation Department. Ann Hays suggested a plaque similar to one used at the George Bush Library for Volunteers. Names are inscribed on a brass plate. Ann Hays made the motion to recognize those members of the Senior Advisory Committee who have passed away by placing their names on a plaque to be located in the lobby of Southwood Community Center. Margaret Carmichael seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. V. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) The committee requested that the monthly senior services report reflect average daily participation as well as total monthly attendance for activities. A report was also given on the Senior Fall Fest held on October 24, 2013 with 400 participants and fall dance with 54 participants. VI. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Senior Games VII.
