OF THE BRYAN LIBRARY BOARD

1 . On the 16 of Oct. 1985„. the Library Board of the City of
Bryan, Texas, convened in regular session in the regular
place in the Rgading Area of the Library Building, at 5 p.U@.
with the following members present:

Also present were Mrs. Clara B. Mounce, City Librarian; Mrs.
Jerilynn A. Williams, Associate City Librarian; and Mrs.
Laura Mills, secretary.
3. There were no visitors.
4. The minutes were approved as mailed.
5. The monthly report of statistics for September indicated
the normal decrease for this time of the year.
6. There were no committee reports.
7. Mrs. Mounce stated that Judge Holmgreen had written a
letter of committment to fund a part time clerk to work 20
hours in the Bryan Library. A part-time clerk has been hired
for the position. Also, whenever the library receives the
$450 from the county for targeting the law books for the
security system, that project will be started.
Mrs. Mounce announced that the library will receive a
Kurzweil Reading Machine the last part of December or early
January. The Kurzweil Reading Machine is a computer designed
to help blind persons to read books in the library and is
also helpful in helping dyslexic children improve reading
skills. It reads aloud in a computer voice. Data Transfer
is also another use of the machine. Bryan Library did not
qualify at first for the machine since the population

| requirements were based on the 1980 census. Mrs. Mounce
pursued the request through the channel of the Texas State
Library and Representatives Richard Smith and Senator Kent
Caperton. Since the library provides serivce to the entire
county and the population is over 100,000, the request was
reconsidered and approved. The machine is provided free of
cost
to the Library and if the Library keeps the machine,

only the cost of maintenance would have to absorbed. Training
will be provided on site when the $25,000 machine arrives.
Mrs. Mounce commented that the Bryan Library will host a
��� Central Texas Library System workshop on October 17.
��� Margaret Nichols who is past president of the Texas Library
Association and a professor of Library Science at North Texas
University, will lead the workshop on basic reference work.
On November 7 the library will host a meeting of area school
librarians for the purpose of getting acquainted and becoming
familiar with the resources of the Bryan Library.
Mrs. Mounce commended a general clerk, Karen Gowan for
receiving the City of Bryan P.R. I.D.E. award. A man had
written a letter to the City Manager commending her for
helping his child in the children 's section.
The Library reported a second occurrence of a middle age
white male who reportedly exposed himself to a teenage boy.
The teenage boy did not report the incident immediately and
the offender left the building before the library staff was
informed. We have a good description of the man and will
call the police should he return.
8. There was no unfinished business.
9.A. The Freedom to Read statement , adopted by the American
Library Association as a general policy was discussed. Mrs.
Bogard moved to adopt the statement as a preamble to the
library 's book selection policy; seconded by Mr. .Paulos the
motion carried.
9.B. A revised meeting room policy and booking procedure was
presented by Mrs. Mounce. Several changes from the old
policy were noted and after adding a statement regarding the
exclusion of alcoholic beverages in the auditorium, the
motion was made by Mr. Paulos to adopt the policy as
changed; seconded by Mrs. Gibson, the motion carried.
Mrs. Bogard stated and the Board agreed to go on record in
commending Mrs. Clara Mounce and her staff for the excellent
work they perform and especially to Mrs. Mounce for her
dedication to ongoing projects for the Library and citizens
of Bryan/College Station.
10. Mrs. Mounce requested that the Branch Library for
College Station be an item for the next agenda.
11 . The motion was made by Mr. Paulos to adjourn the meeting
at 6:30 p.m. ; seconded by Mrs. Bogard , the motion carried.
