OF THE BRYAN LIBRARY BOARD
• MAY 19, 1982
The Bryan Library Board of Trustees met in regular session May 19, 1982. Present
were Mrs. Bookman Peters, Mrs. C. J. Allen, Mrs. Willie Pruitt, Mr. Vic Paulos, Mr.
Mickey McGuire,- Mrs. Willie Belle Bogard, and Mrs. Jean Muetzel.
Excused was Mrs.R. H. Harrison, III.
The minutes of the April meeting were approved as mailed.
A discussion of the February 10, 1982 electrical costs of $8,990.47 was held.
The Board members said that the costs were excessive and recommended that the city
study the system with the idea of replacing it with a more cost-efficient method.
The librarian will write a letter for the Board's approval recommending this study
and replacement of the system instead of repairing the faulty valves and thermostats.
The repair has been estimated at $16,640. The system that heats and cools the
• library was installed when the building was constructed in 1969. The components for
heating and cooling operate simultaneously year round. Warm air is produced by a
boiler and cool air by a refrigerated system. The air handlers operate constantly.
Currently there are at least four 3-way valves and thermostats that do not function.
They must be adjusted manually. This is done when an extremely uncomfortable tem-
perature occurs in some work spaces. This situation causes more electrical consumption.
The repair work recommended includes an outdoor thermostat to bring on the hot water
pump to start the boiler. This thermostat would be set at a predetermined setting so
that when outdoor temperature is (for example 60 degrees) it would automatically
bring on the heat which could be modulated at each zone by its thermostat.
The librarian reported that maintenance work for the grounds would be improved.
It is expected that grass would be planted on Regent Street in June.
The city engineer, Ed. Ilschner, will send a written statement about conditions
• in the library basement and how it could be improved.

The fire escape was adjusted and two members of the fire department tested it and
• said it was safer to use. It descends more slowly.
The librarian reported on the Sunset Advisory Commission held April 30 in Houston.
In remarks to the commission, Mrs. Mounce stated that the Central Texas Library System,
of which Bryan library is a member, could be more harmonious if the director of the
major resource library had more interest in member libraries. In other systems in
Texas the major resource library director is more involved in planning and one
system has even helped member libraries buy a network of computers. The commission has
been holding hearings throughout the state and will make recommendations to the state
legislature to revise, abolish, or leave intact the state library system as it now
exists. The state librarian is not a librarian--he is an archivist. It was recom-.
mended to the commission that the state library be made into two divisions, one
archivial and one library.
• Mrs. Allen reported on her review of the religious collection and the childrens
summer reading program. She distributed copies of the Bookstore Journal's best selling
christian books list, best selling Bible list, best selling christian records, and
classics of the christian bookselling industry. The librarian reported that many
of the materials are already in the collection and the lists will be consulted for
possible purchases. The librarian reported that the Rev. Gregory A. Megill, Associate
Pastor of the First United Methodist Church has donated several hundred books to the-
library from his private collection. The library has added many of these to the
collection. A letter will be sent to Rev. Megill, expressing the appreciation of the
Board for his contributions.
Mrs. Bogard told the Board that she was impressed with the enthusiastic and
courteous members of the library staff. She pointed out that new personnel are
oriented first by the city to show the scope of working for the city of Bryan and that
• job training in the library is handled in a responsible way. Mrs. Muetzel supervises

• employees in adult services, which includes the circulation, cataloging and reference
staff. She is in charge of scheduling in all departments and training in all areas.
A consultant from the Sterling C. Evans _Library, TAMU will be hired to study
the Bryan Library public catalog, make recommendations for its improvement and
lecture to the staff on the new rules now being followed. The rules, the Anglo-
American cataloging Rules II, have caused major changes in main entries, corporate
names, pen names, and other areas , and the library staff is concerned that the public
catalog be updated.
As a part of Mrs. Bogard1s report, it was announced that the evening clerk,
Glenda Duncan, is working full time to assist in the children's department while the
assistant children's librarian, Lois Woodward is on maternity leave. She is in train-
ing now with Ms. Woodward in order to conduct story time for the two year olds. In
the 1982-83 budget, the library will request an additional full time clerk who will
• have a flexible schedule in the circulation department.
Mr. McGuire told the Board about the city's comprehensive plan currently being
conducted from the office of Cliff Miller. Mr. Miller will be asking for input from
the Library Board and staff about future needs of the library. The printed report
be presented to the city council in January, 1983.

The librarian will be preparing the 1982-83 budget and the Library Board will
review the requests so that it can be presented to the city with the Board's
endorsement.
