This public notice was removed from the official posting board at the College Station City Hall on the following date and time: b Dated this—day of , 2010. CITY OF COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS BY: STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY BRAZOS Subscribed and sworn to before me on this the day of 2010. Notary Public—Brazos County, Texas My commission expires: Memorandum ToyParks and Recreation Advisory Board From: Marco A. Cisneros, Director, Parks and Recreation Department Subject: Items of Interest Date: May 5, 2010 Happy "Cinco de Mayo!" It seems as if everywhere we look there are people enjoy themselves in the parks. There was a great turnout at the recent Duck Jam special event that was held at Wolf Pen Creek. There is also plenty of activity in the parks with organized sports, out of town school children visiting the parks and simply people enjoying themselves with good weather and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities to choose from. Park Vendor Permit Task Force — The Board's recommendation will be going to the City Council for consideration at their May 17, 2010 meeting. It is unknown at this time if the City Council will consider adding addition conditions to the fee structure for this item given the current economic difficulties that the City is experiencing. Summer Recreation Program rar Update— PARD staff will give the Board an update on the upcoming summer recreation programs. This is an opportunity for the Board to become better acquainted with the variety of offerings that the department has to offer for the summer. This item will be included in the next Board agenda. College Station Park, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan The Master Plan Subcommittee along with the Joint Planning and Zoning Commission and PARD Board Committee have been working very hard on a proposed draft of the revisions to the City's Park,, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan. It is now time to bring that draft forward for review by the Board and later on by the Planning and Zoning Commission. There will be plenty of items to discuss given the number of changes since the Master Plan was last adopted by the City in 2003. This item will be discussed as part of the next Board agenda. May Parks and Recreation Fac lities Tour The PARD Facilities Tour went off without a hitch, and the rain held off. PARD staff will be seeking direction in the months to come from the Board as to what the Board would be interested in seeing as a part of the September Parks and Recreation Facilities Tour. This item will be discussed as a part of the next Board agenda. PARD Staff Kudos — Once again on a positive note attached are but just a few of the many examples of positive responses and comments that we have received from our PARD clients. This might have something to do with a special action taken by a staff member, or a PARD program, project or facility. It simply is another example ple of helping our clients to fulfill their PARD needs in some form or fashion. The City is very fortunate to have such a talented and skilled PARD staff, and the results speak for themselves! The Tsunamis require that for a child to register with the team,a minimum of one parent in the family must volunteer in some way during the season,The only exception to this is that you can choose not to volunteer which will cost$50 for the first child and$75 for two or more children. The money collected from families that would rather not volunteer, will then in turn be spent to use people from non-profit organizations so that they can work in exchange for donations to their organization. This way we are assured at having our meets staffed by willing workers. *lf two parents want to volunteer from one family, that is terrific.Just list both parent names on this form. College Station, TX 77840 Dear Mr. Cisneros, Thank you very much for your generous contribution to Project Sunshine* The use of your pavilion for our Valentine's party and in the fall has been greatly appreciated. The children and the volunteers had a wonderful time at the events. Your support not only means a lot to the volunteers, but also to the children and families in Project Sunshine. As o know, Project Sunshine at A&M puts on programs for children with disabilities in the Bryan/College Station area. Each year we look forward to planning and carrying out activities for the children, however,we could not do any of this without the kind support of people like you. Of course they started playing there, when the fence was first removed. Everyone was impressed with the chipped rubber surface that will cushion falls. One neighbor told me that his family has already cooked a meal there! Please thank your staff for cutting down the dead tree hanging over the play equipment this week. Thank everyone who has worked on our park. We appreciate your efforts in making the park much more fun as well as safer for the children. Oh, the dogs like the water bowl too! I would like to point out an employee of the city of College Station that has done a good deed towards me. At around 2:15 this morning I got in an argument with my girlfriend in the west campus parking garage. 1 decided the best choice was to walk home and let her cool off after I called a core escort for her. I began walking home, and after a short walk down agronomy Victor Cass asked if I nedded a ride. Even though it was out of the way and I insisted upon him dropping me off at the light on Villa Maria he insisted on taking me home. I'm writing this because I believe he should be recognized for his services that are not within his job description to the residents of the BCS area. Thank you. Director Cisneros and members of the Parks and Recreation Department recognized that the play equipment was aging and did not meet current safety standards. I spoke.with Director Cisneros and Mr. David Schmidt about our park. After that Mr. Pete Vanecek, Park Planner, met in Windwood Park with neighbors to look at the site and discuss the possibilities for and placement of possiblenew equipment. Surveys were passed, out o each'home prioritize what residents wanted to'have in the park, and the results were given to Mr. Vanecek. Mr. Vanecek later came as a speaker to our neighborhood meeting with a park design, so he could get further.input. Even though budget constraints limited the final choices, we are very pleased With the park. The bid went to Wade Contractors, Inc., and I got to speak with Aaron Marshall ase supervised the work. We had asked that trees be saved as much as possible, so that the playground would continue to e shaded. Everyone worked to fulfill that request. Two smaller dead trees were removed by your Park staff for safety. After the construction fences were down and the paint was dry, neighbors came to thep ark to celebrate on April 171 . Of course, families actuallystarted enjoying oyi the park as soon as the fences were down. Picnics and birthday parties have been held there already. I see children and parents there every day enjoying the new swings, playing on the slides, and whirling around on the equipment. I must admit I enjoy swinging on the swings too! A park is critical to keeping a neighborhood young and vibrant. Young families arehappyto move here, because you have provided such a good park. Thank you for your vote to approve the funding for the park. Come and visit Windwood Park!
