HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/26/2009 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, October 26, 2009 College Station Teen Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00am MINUTES Members Present: E.E. Bums, Jon Denton, Anne Hazen, Clifford Linsey, Colleen Risinger, Jean Roberts,Neal Nutall and Joanna Yeager. Members Absent: Joyce Davis, Dorothy Hernandez, Jack Hernandez, Dorthea Robinson and Ron Silvia Staff Present: Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator Visitors Present: Robert Meyer Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:04 a.m. by Joanna Yeager, Vice- Chairman H. Welcome guests and visitors Robert Meyer expressed appreciation for the Senior World Passport Program and spoke about how much he enjoyed attending the series. III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on September 28, 2009 E. E. Burns made the motion to approve the minutes. Clifford Linsey seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Discussion, consideration and possible action with Mayor White concerning senior programs and meeting space. Mayor White expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to visit with the committee and reported that he had just returned from the annual meeting of the Texas Municipal League. He reported on the topic of transportation which included the High Speed Rail. One proposed route in Texas referred to as the T-Bone would include Dallas/Ft.Worth at the North end and San Antonio at the South end and T off at Ft. Hood, Kileen and come East through College Station then to George Bush Intercontinental and Port of Houston. This would offer an economic benefit to our community. Mayor White also reported the current population of College Station is 93,235. New businesses coming to town include HEB and Lowe's. The Mayor presented the possibility of using one room at the College Station Conference Center on George Bush Dr. as a temporary place for seniors to meet. The Mayor expressed that he understands the need for a place for the seniors to meet and advised the committee to continue inviting council members to attend our monthly meetings and to come before council regularly. The Mayor received applause and thanks for visiting with the Senior Advisory Committee. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action on Brazos Valley Senior Games, Women's Basketball with Judy McFarland-Heaney. Judy McFarland-Heaney was unable to attend. Marci Rodgers explained that Mrs. Heaney is interested in starting women's 65 and over basketball and has a coach. Anyone interested may contact Marci Rodgers for more information. VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning Washington County Senior Center 501 3C status. Marci Rodgers explained that the senior centers in Brenham and Caldwell operate under a non-profit status and have the use of a building donated by the city or school district. The committee discussed the advantages of forming a non-profit foundation in order to receive donations and raise funds. Jon Denton and Anne Hazen agreed to look into the paper work and contact individuals who might be interested in serving. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator report regarding upcoming programs and events. (Report on file) VIII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. • Invite two council members to the next meeting • Report on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Goals • Update on 501 3C IX.
