HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/31/2006 - Regular Minutes - Parks Board College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, July 31, 2006 College Station Teen Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00am Minutes Members Present: Patricia Boughton, E.E. Burns, Rick Heaney, Edgar Jones, Robert Meyer, Haskell M. Monroe, Neal Nutall, Jr., Donald Pirwitz, Raymond Reed, Colleen Risinger, Yvonne Stevens, Doreen Todd Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Joyce Davis, Dorothy Hernandez, Jack Hernandez, Laura Holmes Staff Present: Peter Lamont, Recreation Superintendent and Marci Rodgers, Senior Services Coordinator I. Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:03am by Robert Meyer, Chairman II. Welcome new members Robert Meyer welcomed returning committee members and new member, Don Pirwitz. Committee members were asked to give personal introductions. III. Hear visitors No visitors present IV. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on June 26, 2006 Rick Heaney made the motion to approve the minutes. Haskell Monroe seconded the motion. The motion passed. V. Discussion, consideration and possible action on update of Senior Center Project Peter Lamont has been named the Project Manager and gave an update to the committee on the Senior Center Project. Council approved a fee of$75,500.00 to BRW Architects for a Conceptual Design for a Senior Center facility. Peter Lamont has been working with the City's Legal department and Finance department on the contract. The contract must be signed by the City Manager and the Mayor. Once the Mayor has signed the contract, the architects will be given notice to proceed. Peter asked the committee to collect pictures and photographs that will be helpful in illustrating ideas to the architect. Peter will also be updating the Committee regularly. Ray Reed made the motion that Peter Lamont approach the architects in regard to the public meetings, with the request to seek guidance to insure that the public meetings are representative of all senior populations in our community. Rick Heaney seconded the motion. The motion passed. VI. Discussion, consideration and possible action on Committee sub-committees Robert Meyer asked the committee to review the suggested sub-committees and for each member to serve on at least one sub-committee. The sub-committees and members are as follows: Senior Center Project Ray Reed, Joanna Yeager, Dorothy Hernandez, Neal Nutall and Don Pirwitz Promotion of Senior Activities, Services and Information Rick Heaney, Haskell Monroe, (Laura Holmes, Jack Hernandez and Joyce Davis) will be asked to serve on this sub-committee Programs Yvonne Stevens, Doreen Todd, Colleen Risinger, Pat Boughton, E.E. Burns and Edgar Jones Each sub-committee will meet in August to discuss their course of action and elect one individual to report for that committee. VII. Discussion, consideration and possible action on the Committee Goals for 2006 These goals will be assigned to the appropriate sub-committee to work toward achieving. VIII. Senior Services Coordinator Report (Report attached) IX. Next meeting: Monday, August 28, 2006 X. Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 11:35am Senior Services Report July 2006 July Events Ice Cream Socials have been scheduled with: Terrace Pines( July 11th), Lulac Oakhill and the Villas of Rock Prairie. The purpose is to meet the residents and distribute information about programs offered by the Parks &Recreation Department Senior Services. On August 1st- Lulac Oakhill at 6:00pm to encourage National Night Out with the College Station Police Department and we are scheduled to be at the Villas of Rock Prairie on August 17th Transportation was provided to seniors to attend the classic film, Harvey Girls at the Bush Library. The films are free along with refreshments. 130 attended the July 19th Exploring History Lunch Lecture at the Conference Center. Programs such as the Bridge, 42, Free Computer Classes and Computer Club are running smoothly. The Lincoln Center Program for Seniors has a temporary manager in place. We are looking for a new manager to supervise the program. The program is available to seniors 60 and over, Monday thru Friday from 8:00am— 12:00 noon. Upcoming Events: August 3-24 Free Beginning Computer Class for Seniors August 9 & 23 Computer Club Meeting August 10 & 24 42 players meet August 18 Third Friday Bridge group plays August 16 Exploring History Lunch/Lecture September 5 Xtra Education brochure available and will list Fall Classes for seniors. Registration for classes begins on Tuesday, September 5th at the College Station Parks and Recreation Department located at 1000 Krenek Tap Rd. in Central Park.
