HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/29/2012 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, October 29, 2012 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd MINUTES Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jon Denton, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Jerry Markowich, Robert Meyer, Ron Silvia and Pat Vanderboom Members Absent: Susan McGrail, Pearl Robertson and Mabelene Robinson Staff Present: Peter Lamont and Marci Rodgers I.Call to order The meeting was called to order at 10:08 am by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman II.Welcome and hear visitors III.Approval of minutes from regular meeting on September 24, 2012 Jerry Markowich made a motion to approve the minutes. Ron Silvia seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV.Introduction of Peter Lamont, Interim Assistant Director of Programs for the Parks and Recreation Department Peter Lamont was introduced to the committee and explained the reorganization of the department. Peter Lamont will oversee senior programs, Xtra Ed, aquatics, athletics, Southwood Community Center, Lincoln Center and the Conference Center. The committee voiced concerns about Southwood Community Center usage for current senior programs and asked about plans for expanding in the future. Peter Lamont spoke about the Senior Games and said that on st December 1 he will be traveling to San Antonio to make a formal presentation to the State Senior Games Board for a bid to host local games in College Station in 2013. He agreed to keep the Senior Advisory Committee informed. V.Discussion, consideration and possible action concerning program sub- committee report regarding upcoming programs and events Members of the th Program Sub-committee met on October 9 to discuss programs for November and the December Open House. Calendars were distributed for Southwood Community Center and Lincoln Center’ November activities. The program sub-committee will th meet again on Tuesday, November 13 at 9:30am. VI.Discussion, consideration and possible action on revising the mission statement for the Senior Advisory Committee Ron Silvia, Jerry Markowich, Jon Denton and Margaret Carmichael met to discuss the current mission statement. A new statement was presented to the committee for review. The new mission statement presented reads; “ To provide area seniors with a place that fulfills their needs with fellowship and activities. Seniors may also provide leadership based on knowledge, talents and experience that benefits the community.” Bob Meyer made the motion to accept the new mission statement. Ann Hays seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. VII.Discussion and possible action concerning the Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2012 The committee reviewed the goals and discussed signage at Southwood. The Council recently approved to rename the park to Brian Bachmann Community Park. The committee suggested that the new signage include information on Senior Programs offered at Southwood Community Center. VIII.Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events () report on file Marci Rodgers highlighted attendance figures for the past month and spoke on upcoming programs for seniors. The Senior Fall Fest was a success despite the rain. Approximately 300 attended the event and many favorable comments were received. Marci Rodgers spoke on the programs offered at Lincoln Center including the Senior th Pageant coming on December 8 . IX.Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given.
