HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/27/2017 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory Committee College Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting February 27, 2017 Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd. 10:00 a.m. Minutes Members Present: Jean Adams, Carol Blaschke, Bryana Childers, Jerry Crockett, Russell Kohel, Jeanne Machrowicz, June Morris, Barbara Pratt, Mickey Stokes, Darla VanFickell, Janet Wood and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Arlene Petroski, Norma Teetes, Christine Williams Staff Present: Ana Romero and Marci Rodgers I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 10:02 a.m. by Jerry Crockett, Chairman II. Hear Visitors : Visitors were introduced III. Approval of minutes from meeting held on January 30, 2017: Russell Kohel made a motion to approve the minutes. Mickey Stokes seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. IV. Introduction of new Recreation Manager, Ana Romero: Ana Romero was introduced to the committee. V. Presentation, possible action and discussion with Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce , Glen Brewer, President/CEO : Mr. Royce Hickman, Community Laison with the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce was introduced and made the presentation. Mr. Hickman spoke to the committee about the recent growth in retail, entertainment, housing, medical and research facilities moving into our community. He also talked about the recent additions and future construction projects on the Texas A&M Campus. VI. Report from Goals Sub -Committee – Mickey Stokes: Report attached. The sub - committee recommended three goals along with action steps for the committee to consider. • Goal: Community awareness and visibility of senior programs offered by the College Station Parks and Recreation Department City of College Station Page 2 of 2 • Goal: Continue to be involved in the planning, developing and design of the future senior and community center • Goal: Promote Senior Friendly Business Award Barbara Pratt made a motion to recommend the 2017 goals presented be approved. Jeanne Machrowicz seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. VII. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events : Report attached. Marci Rodgers discussed the February report and attendance figures. An update was given on the Valentine’s Day events and the Senior Games. The March calendar was dis tributed to the committee. Sheriff Chris Kirk will make a presentation on March 22, 2017 at Southwood on the Crime Stopper Program. VIII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. IX. Adjourn: The committee adjourned at 11:13 a.m.
