HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/30/2014 - Regular Minutes - Senior Advisory CommitteeCollege Station Senior Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Monday, June 30, 2014 10:00am Southwood Community Center 1520 Rock Prairie Rd MINUTES Members Present: Margaret Carmichael, Jerry Crockett, Frank Duchmasclo, Ann Hays, Jerry Markowich, Pat VanderBoom and Joanna Yeager Members Absent: Jon Denton, Russell Kohel, Susan McGrail and Pearl Robertson Staff Present: Marci Rodgers I. Call to order The meeting was called to order by Frank Duchmasclo, Chairman, at 10:00am II. Hear Visitors New staff members at Southwood Community Center were introduced to the committee III. Approval of minutes from regular meeting on May 19, 2014 Jerry Markowich made the motion to approve the minutes. Joanna Yeager seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously IV. Presentation and discussion on program sub-committee report Pat VanderBoom reported to the committee that Ann Hays, Rhonda Haverland, Pat VanderBoom, Joanna Yeager and Ron Silvia met with Marci Rodgers on June 24th to discuss July – October monthly activity calend ars. Marci reported that the deadline for the fall guide was last Friday, June 27 th and will include activities for August – December. Highlights were discussed for the remainder of the summer months such as Ice Cream Social with Fire Dept. and Marian Anderson String Quartet Outreach Concert both on Wednesday, June 25th, Cold Watermelon with CS Police Dept. on July 30th and Casino Days on August 27th and Texercise starts on July 16th. The committee discussed movies and special events for the next quarter. The annual Fall Fest at the American Pavilion will be held on Thursday, October 23rd. Looking at changing theme to German Fest with band and sausage on a stick! Fall classes include art classes, computer, genealogy and bridge. The sub -committee was thanked for their work. V. Discussion and possible action concerning Senior Advisory Committee Goals FY 2014 The committee reviewed the 2014 goals. Goal: The Senior Advisory Committee should be actively involved in the 2015 Bond Program The committee would like to be kept up to date on the application process for citizens to serve on the Bond CIP committee Goal: Continue to develop quality senior programs Ongoing. The Senior World Passport Program will take place again this fall Goal: Market Senior Programs continue to research avenues such as churches Goal: Enhance current facility at Southwood Community Center to accommodate senior adults A list of repairs and needed improvements were prepared and discussed with Parks Department staff. Those improvements will be dealt with on an individual bases within current department budget Goal: Recognize the Generous Contribution of Robert Meyer Marci Rodgers reported that the city has not received the funds bequeathed by Mr. Meyer. Renaming the center after Mr. Meyer was discussed. VI. Presentation, possible action and discussion on Senior Services Coordinator Report regarding current and upcoming programs and events (report attached) Marci Rodgers thanked the committee for their help with the Seniors Expo and reviewed June events and discussed upcoming events in July. VII. Presentation, discussion and possible action on future agenda items: A Committee member may inquire about a subject for which notice has not been given. A statement of specific factual information or the recitation of existing policy may be given. Any deliberation shall be limited to a proposal to place the subject on an agenda for a subsequent meeting. Agenda Items for July 28, 2014 meeting • Discussion with Parks Director, David Schmitz, on lighting system for Southwood Parking Lot • Discuss recognizing Senior Friendly Businesses in College Station VIII. Adjourn The committee adjourned at 10:55 am.
