Goodwin Josh M Harrison Date: January 7, 2006 From: Josh and Vicky Harrison, 207 Lee Avenue, College Station, Texas 77840 RE: Hearing on January 10, 2006 relating to property located at 211 Lee Avenue, College Station, Texas 77840 We own the home next door to the Newmans at 207 Lee Avenue. Although,we are unable to attend the hearing on January 10, 2006,we would like to offer our support for the proposal by the Newmans, for the improvements to their home located at 211 Lee Avenue. Vicky and I have reviewed the plans for the Newmans' renovations, and believe that the Newmans are to be commended for their willingness to invest so much in their home, and in our neighborhood. The plans for the improvements to be made to their home are nothing short of spectacular, and we are strongly in support of their efforts. Please approve what the Newmans propose for the good of our neighborhood. Thanks for your consideration of this. CII" G. (1) osh M. Harrison Vicky W. arrison Carolyn H. and Thomas C. Cartwright, 211 Lee Avenue., College Station, Texas Our house was built on land acquired by colonist Joseph E. Scott on June 4, 1825 from Empresario Stephen F. Austin. A century later a portion of the league of land was purchased by J. E. Angel, H. E. Burgess and W. M. Sparks of Oakwood Realty Company. This land was later designated as Oakwood Addition. Our lot, number 21, was purchased in 1935 from the Oakwood Realty Company by L. P. Gabbard, Head of the Agricultural Economics Department at Texas A. and M. College. He subsequently sold the lot to Horace Hamilton who contracted with a local company, G. S. Parker Lumber Company, to build our house in 1937. The architecture and construction is easily identified as to period but it is unique, designed to fit a relatively narrow lot. This one-of-a-kind, two story brick house has over-size windows which give it warmth and good lighting. The study and living room have built-in book shelves which served the needs of the professors who lived here and lend an air of a scholarly decor. After the Hamiltons, the house was occupied by the families of Alfred E. Chalk, Head , Dept. of Economics; Col. Delmar Anderson, Commander of the Corps of Cadets; and Thomas C. Cartwright, Professor, Animal Science Dept. We purchased our home in 1958. 01/08/2006 05:52 7135521761 MAHONEY AND ASSnCS PAGE 01 Mahoney & Associates oarnevs at Law 9601 Katy Freeway,Suite 375 Houston,Texas 77024-1392 (713)552-1700*1'AX(713)552-1761 h7P.i/ww w.rnahen c y-n c Poci 0101.00111 PUtriek 1), Mahoney* Xerxes( )K. While of the area. Investments in the homes in the area south of Campus along George Bush Blvd. continues a trend already started where the homes and properties arc being upgraded, improved and increased in value. Blocking the im r vements of the homes in our area my turn our neighborhood into an area for run down, low tax base, high densitystudent housing. This type of investment requires a variance to be completed and we think it is important to look at the overall picture of the neighborhood,as well as the property itself. Restricting new improvements to homes in our neighborhood to be subject to rigid, fixed and out of date rules consigns our neighborhood to a long, slow, but steady decline in the value of homes and the area.. Further to request the variance is the fact that the Newman property(a part of the Oakwood Addition ) backs up to a ten foot strip of land between Oakwood Addition and Holik's Restricted Home Sites subdivision which,is dedicated to and owned by the City of College Station. The ten foot strip of land belongs to neither property owners of Holik's or those of Oakwood. The City ofCollege Station does not maintain this strip of land which only severs as a detriment to the property owners because of the over grown status and possible illegal entry points to the homes which back up to the ten foot strip. The Newmans by improving and using their lot for parking at the rear of theirro e help clean up this strip of land through their use of their land immediately adjacent to the ten foot strip of landtll wh ch otherwise languishes in an abandoned state. The map sent the notice of the Request for a Variance does not accurately reflect the title documents related to the subdivisions property lines between Oakwood Addition and Holik's Restricted Home Sites. rely, i CO(A. f Patrick Mahoney 3 January 2006 Mr. Trey Fletcher, AICP Senior Planner, City of College Station 1101 Texas Ave. S College Station, TX 77840 Dear Mr. Fletcher, Re: The easement on the Newman property (211 Lee) I am physically unable to attend the meeting. It is very important for the city to permit the easement on the Newman property. 1. Since we have a serious parking problem on our narrow street, it is important to have off-street parking. If they are not granted easement for carports on the back, they will have to park on the street. 2. We need to continue to improve property values for the good of the neighborhood as well as the community. Thank you so much for your consideration of this request. )6(4,-tte Janet Loveless 206 Lee Ave. College Station, TX 77840 Page 1 of 2 Deborah Grace - Fwd: RE: HOA for Oakwood From: Sven Griffin To: Grace, Deborah Date: 12/8/2005 8:18:41 AM Subject: Fwd: RE: HOA for Oakwood CC: Elrod, Katie; Simms, Lance Ok, There appears to be some confusion on how the information regarding HOA notifications is done. What is occurring is that at the time I do the property owner notification in GIS I am also using the HOA GIS file Kate had me create some time ago. So when I query the GIS for everything within 200' of a property it will grab the information pertaining to any HOA contacts, which I then pass along to Grace or Lisa. That's why I have asked in the past that if there are any HOA updates (contacts names, address, or new HOAs) I be notified so we can maintain a current GIS file. For the time being I will update the GIS based upon the excel spreadsheet once I get caught up with my work load. However, at some point I recommend that we figure out a way to notify myself or the other person covering GIS here when a change occurs so that we minimize the potential for excluding an HOA from notification. -Sven >>> Deborah Grace 12/08/05 7:54 AM >>> Sven, do whatever you do, for us, with this. >>> Katie Elrod 12/07/05 3:26 PM >>> Here are the contacts for Oakwood - the zip is 77840.
