Polyethylene is the most chemically inert of the major pipe materials. It should be noted that normal ground water, storm water, or sanitary sewage does not harm Quality CulvertTM pipes. Some areas of the country have naturally occurring conditions which cause unusually low (acidic) or high (alkaline)pH in the soil and ground water. Typically, in the eastern part of the U.S., Low pH is common in coal mining areas and in forested areas. In the western states alkali conditions are common in arid areas and acidic conditions are common in the timber lands. PE has a good record of success in both acid and alkali environments. Heavy use of fertilizers on golf courses and farms can also effect the pH and chemical composition of the run-off water. Aluminum is particularly sensitive to this environment. Ponds can be highly corrosive due to high concentrations of phosphates and nitrates. Polyethylene is not effected in this environment. Salt water is highly corrosive due to its very low resistance to electrical flow; metals submerged in salt water suffer from galvanic (or electro-chemical) attack. Polyethylene is an insulator(dielectric) and is not effected by electro-chemical attack. Weatherability Quality CulvertTMcorrugated polyethylene pipe is primarily intended for buried service. It may be stored or used for prolonged periods in direct exposure to the sun and weather. The polyethylene contains a minimum of 2% carbon black as required by AASHTO and ASTM D3350 for weather resistant grades. This blocks the sun's potentially damaging ultra-violet rays and maintains the pipe's properties. Temperature The working temperature range of Quality Culvert'pipe depends on the chemicals in the liquid carried. Generally the range is from -80 degrees F to 140 degrees F. An increase in temperature reduces stiffness; a decrease in temperature increases stiffness. The coefficient of thermal expansion for PE is 6x10 inch/inch/degree F. Generally, this means the pipe changes 0.07 inch in length for each degree F per 100 feet. Pipe buried under 2 feet or more will be sufficiently restrained to prevent movement. The corrugations will accommodate some movement. In above-ground applications thermal expansion should be considered. 1-352-343-8488 FAX 1-352-742-1539 1-866-343-8488 TOLL FREE QUALITY CULVERT ` }5 r• "1 25726 CR 561 - ASTATULA, FL - 34705 - 1-352-343-8488 DURABILITY OF POLYETHYLENE PIPE Abrasion Polyethylene has been shown to have from 6 to 30 times the abrasion resistance of steel. The actual ratio depends largely on the abrasive particle size and velocity. Each different material will have its own abrasion characteristics. or 1-352-343-8488 FAX 1-352-742-1539 1-866-343-8488 TOLL FREE ir Bks 4 QUALITY CULVERT y oa . oa . r . o . 25726 CR 561 - ASTATULA, FL - 34705 1-352-343-8488 ti PRODUCT SPECIFICATION SHEET _ Single Wall Pipe Nomal Diameter-0.D.)
