a pd • 0 6 . 4 0 Design Report Waterline Fire Flow Analysis for Meadowcreek Subdivision — Phase 1 Brazos County, Texas January 2005 Prepared By: TEXCON General Contractors 1707 Graham Road College Station, Texas 77845 (979) 764 -7743 , moo ®aa ®0 OF TF \ii , .. ........ .. .}- 0 •r ' s p d JOSEPH P. SC UL r,< ''•f I , Ei. k/ . E v 1.0 INTRODUCTION & DESCRIPTION The purpose of this report is to provide a description of the proposed waterlines to be constructed with Meadowcreek Subdivision, Phase 1, and to provide the results of the analysis of the waterlines under fire flow conditions. An existing Wellborn SUD (Special Utility District) waterline is located along Koppe Bridge Road adjacent to the project site. The existing waterline may not have the capacity to meet the required fire hydrant flow requirements, therefore, the Wellborn SUD (Special Utility District) will construct a new 12" diameter waterline from its elevated storage tank in Wellborn to the subdivision site. This proposed line will be approximately 6,100 feet in length. The proposed water mains to supply the subdivision will connect to the Wellborn SUD waterline. The water mains will be constructed using 12 ", 8 ", and 3" diameter pipe. The 3" waterline will be constructed of ASTM D2241 PVC pipe. The 12" and 8" waterline will be constructed of DR -14, PVC pipe meeting the requirements of AWWA C -909 with mechanical joint fittings 2.0 FIRE FLOW REQUIREMENTS The flow required for fire hydrant flow for the subdivision is 1,000 gallons per minute (gpm), for each fire hydrant proposed for this subdivision. 3.0 WATERLINE SYSTEM ANALYSIS The waterline system was analyzed using the WaterCAD computer program developed by Haestad Methods, Inc. Exhibit "Al" shows the location of the Subdivision and the proposed alignment of the 12" waterline from Wellborn to the site. Exhibit "A2" is a schematic of the proposed waterline, which shows the locations of the fire hydrant. A normal domestic use flow of 1.5 gpm was included in the analysis for each residential lot. This results in a normal demand of 135 gpm, which was included in the analysis The Wellborn SUD elevated storage tank has a capacity of 1,000,000 gallons. The tank operates within a water level range of elevation 485 to 490. The hydraulic grade for the tank for this analysis was set at elevation 485. The ground elevation at the storage tank is approximately 340 and the ground elevation for Phase 1 of the Subdivision ranges from 300 to 325. The computer model was run with a fire flow of 1,000 gpm at each fire hydrant proposed for this project. Exhibit "B" is a summary of the pipe system junction nodes with a fire flow of 1,000 gpm from Fire Hydrant No. 3. The lowest residual pressure occurred in the system at Junction J -24 and J -25, which is at Fire Hydrant No. 3. The pressure at this point is estimated by the model to be 60.4 psi, which exceeds the minimum of 20 psi required by the TCEQ regulations. Exhibits "C" & "D" are summaries of the pipe sections for the system under this demand scenario. The maximum velocity occurs in the 8" water main at 7.3 feet per second, and occurs in Pipes P -18 through P -20 and P -32. A separate analysis was run for the domestic use of 1.5 gpm per unit for the project, and the minimum residual pressure was 70.9 psi, which exceeds the minimum pressure of 35 psi required by TCEQ. Exhibit "E" is a summary of the pipe system junction nodes for this scenario. Minor losses in this system were not calculated, as they were assumed to be insignificant A second computer model was run with a fire Clow of 1,000 gpm at each fire hydrant proposed for this project, as well as, a normal domestic use flow of 1.5 gpm for all of the residential lots proposed for this subdivision. This results in a normal demand of 510 gpm. which was included in the analysis. Exhibit "F" is a summary of the pipe system junction nodes with a fire flow of 1,000 gpm from Fire Hydrant No. 3. The lowest residual pressure occurred in the system at Junction J -24 & J -25, which is at Fire Hydrant No. 3. The pressure at this point is estimated by the model to be 51.1 psi, which exceeds the minimum of 20 psi required by the TCEQ regulations. 4.0 CONCLUSIONS The waterlines proposed for this development should adequately provide the fire flow required with acceptable values for headloss and velocity. This analysis was done assuming the 12" waterline from the Wellborn elevated storage tank is constructed and in service. Flow tests should be performed on the fire hydrants after construction to confirm the 1,000 gpm fire flow is provided. Exhibits __.] '-________________ a p b o (° . S _ °' R' so 0 a. .. °T''.
