CITY OF COLLEGE STATION JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: GIS Technician PTNB REPORTS TO: Greenways Program Manager
DEPT: Planning & Development Services
JOB SUMMARY
Develop , maintain , and support a variety of geographic information systems (GIS) datasets and maps for the C ity
of College Station 's planning and development services operations . Provide mapping support to internal staff and
the general public.
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES
1. Develop , maintain , update and retrieve information for various GIS datasets including geodatabases ,
shapefiles , and layers within a spatial database engine (SOE).
2. Perform data convers ion/projection and integration of external data sources into GIS . This includes
interpreting and researching legal documents ; digitiz ing cartographic data ; and entering or analyzing
demographic and geographic data .
3. Produce maps and related graphics (both digital and paper) for public hearings , meetings , other public
forums , and other department needs such as reports , publications , or related documents. --==--4 . Conduct analysis on data and produces documents and maps for decision making purposes .
5. Routinely meet with individuals and groups to assess problems and provide solutions .
6 . Handle requests from customers for copies of various documents and maps .
7. Respond to g~neral questions regarding information and data found on documents and maps.
8. Perform field, archival , historical , and statistical research in support of department activities .
9. Develop and maintain document and map archives .
10 . Develop and maintain procedure manuals , metadata , specifications and other documentation for GIS L __ a_c_ti_v ~it~s and datasets .
11. Provide computer technical support to office staff and field crews .
' 12 . Maintain a high level of proficiency in GIS software , professional practices , and techniques .
13 . Operate and maintain plotters , printers , and wide format scanners .
14 . Perform other duties as ass igned .
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Required :
Preferred :
Associate 's Degree in Geography or related field ; or, an equivalent comb ination of education and
experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS
Knowledge of fundamental GIS principles and practices
Experience with MS Windows and W indows-based applications
Excellent cartographic , written and oral commun ication skills
Familiarity with mapping , surveying , and engineering principles and practices as applied to
municipal systems .
Valid Texas Driver's License
Bachelor' degree in Geography or closely related field of study
Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD
GIS Data analysis experience
Programming experience relevant to the ESRI ArcGIS environment
Experience with addressing
Ab ility to interpret and reproduce platted information

GIS Interns .
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS
Knowledge of fundamental GIS principles and practices
Experience with MS Windows and Windows-based applications
