This acceptable alternate is found on page 83 of the Neenah Foundry Company Catalogue, 11th edition. Both grates have 0.6 SF of free space, and they are functionally equivalent. Be sure to form the box in accord with the dimensions specified. In answer to your other question -spacing the #4 bars in this inlet box at 5" on center each way will be acceptable.
