Jeffrey began enforcement on the KFC sign and came across a discrepancy in the paperwork. While the sign application had identified the offending sign as not approved, this information did not get included in the actual sign permit. In addition, the permit was issued for the full valuation of the sign package proposal. We have stopped enforcement on their awning sign. On the upside, we learn from these experiences! In the future, when you are reviewing a sign permit that includes more than one sign, please consider the sign package as a whole. If all of the proposals do not meet code; then the sign package should be denied. The burden is then on the applicant to submit a new sign package. Now granted, we can work with an applicant to submit adjustments to proposals, just like we would for an individual sign, but we should never approve any part of a package individually. This way should make it very clear to an applicant what we can and can not do. This is similar to the stand that we're taking on the Longmire CPA --we agree that there may be some merit to part of the proposal, but we are not going to piecemeal proposals --we are going to respond to the entirety of the request. If the request is unsuccessful, an applicant is welcome to submit a new proposal that has a better chance of receiving support. Kudos to Jason who has made a great sign suggestion! I will see if there is anything that can be done to keep sign permits in their own place in P&DS, and remain in the offices (at least until that sign is taken down!) instead of being taken to storage.
