To whom it may concern
This letter is being written in response to questions concerning the adequacy, of`the Microllam®
beam being used in a valley application over the Bedroom 4/optional study area of the home in question.
This beam has been rip cut to a depth of 7-1/4" for a distance of approximately 30" to accommodate the
slope of a tray ceiling in this room. Based on the loads determined from the architectural plans the single
ply 1-3/4"x7-1/4" Microllam beam is not sufficient to support the present loads by code.
My recommendation is to add one additional ply of 1-3/4"x7-1/4" Microllam beam to the current
beam to net a size of 3-1/2"x7-1/4" Microllam, according to the calculation that I have provided, the
maximum unbraced length of this 3-1/2"x7-114" beam is 9' in the horizontal measurement.
NOTE: This letter and calculation is only valid for Trus Joist® Microllam® product, if either ply of the beam
in question is not Microllam® product, this letter and accompanying calculations are not valid, and I
recommend consulting with the manufacturer of that beam product to determine adequacy.
