ATHENS, GA 30606 PH: 706.552.3881 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 • SECTION 02950 LANDSCAPE PLANTING PART I -GENERAL 1.01 SECTION INCLUDES A. Supply of materials, installation and warranty of trees, shrubs, and groundcover, sod, hydromulch, granite walks, and maintenance of all work within this section until final acceptance by Owner. 1.02 SUBMITTALS A. Submit copies of receipts for all amendments called for in this section within 30 days of project start date. B. Submit written request for inspection of plant material to Landscape Architect. State the place of growth and quantity of each type of plants to be inspected by Landscape Architect prior to purchase or delivery. C. Contractor shall submit a sample and the source of topsoil, backfill mix, mulch, pavers and gravel to Landscape Architect for approval prior to purchase or installation. 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Quality Control: 1. Trees, Shrubs, Groundcovers: Provide trees, shrubs, and groundcovers of quantity, size, genus, species, and variety shown and scheduled for landscape work and complying with recommendations and requirements of ANSI Z60.1 "American Standard of Nursery Stock." Provide healthy, vigorous stock, grown in recognized nursery in accordance with good horticultural practice and free of disease, insects, eggs, larvae, and defects such as knots, sun-scald, injuries, abrasions, or disfigurement. a. Sizes: Provide trees, shrubs and groundcovers of the sizes shown or specified. Trees and shrubs of larger size may be used if acceptable to the Landscape Architect, and if sizes of root balls or containers are increased proportionately. Sizes of trees and shrubs are measured to the main body of the plant, not the tips. 2. Plants shall be subject to inspection and approval by Landscape Architect at place of growth or upon delivery for conformity to specifications. Source of trees, plant material, and soil amendments shall be submitted to Landscape Architect for approval prior to purchasing or delivery to site. Substitution of trees, plants, or soil amendments shall not be made unless approval is given by Landscape Architect. Landscape Contractor shall make request for substitutions in writing to the Landscape Architect. 3. Office Location: Contractor must have a permanent office located within a 100- mile radius of the project site. The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 2 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 ,. 1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Delivery: 1. Deliver fertilizer to site in original unopened containers bearing manufacturer's guaranteed chemical analysis, name, trademark, and conformance to State Law. 2. Deliver all plants with legible identification labels stating proper botanical names and sizes indicated on plant list. 3. Protect plant material during delivery to prevent damage to root ball, trunks or branches, or desiccation of leaves. B. Storage: 1. Store plant material in shade, protect from weather, and maintain adequate moisture level. 2. Coordinate tree delivery and installation such that they are completed on the same day. 3. Plants, amendments and tools, etc. stored on site shall be at the contractors risk. Owner will not be responsible for thief or damage. Coordinate location of storage area with owner's representative. 1.05 GUARANTY AND REPLACEMENT A. Provide guaranty for all plant material installed under the Contract to remain alive and in healthy, vigorous condition for a period of one year after final acceptance date. B. Replace all plant materials that are dead or unhealthy within 7 days of notification by Owner or Landscape Architect. Opinion of plant status by the Owner or Landscape Architect shall be final. Guaranty shall not include damage or loss of plants due to acts of God, acts of vandalism, or negligence on the part of the Owner. PART2PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Backfill Mix for Trees and Shrubs: Shall be Premium Backfill mix by local vender, contractor to supply submittals B. Fertilizer: 1. Granular fertilizer: Slow release, granular, percentages by weight, (N itrogen, Phosphoric acid, Potash), mixed by a commercial fertilizer supplier. a. Sod lawns: 16-20-8 The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 3 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 ,. ' 2. Planting Tablets: a. Slow-release type (20-10-5) with potential acidity of not more than 5% by weight containing the following percentage of nutrients by weight: 20% nitrogen 10% phosphoric acid 5% potash 2.6% combined calcium 1.6% combined sulfur 35% iron (elemental from ferrous sulfate) b. 21 gram tablets as manufactured by Agriform or approved equal, applied per manufacturer's instructions. C. Imported Topsoil : 1. Shall be Basic Turf Mix, by local vender, contractor to supply submittals. D. Plant Material: 1. Plants shall be in accordance with the Texas State Department of Agriculture's regulation for nursery inspections, rules and rating. 2. The minimum acceptable size of the plants will correspond with that normally expected for species and varieties of commercially available nursery stock. 3. Plants not conforming to the requirements shall be considered defective and replaced with new plants at the Contractor's expense. 4. Pruning : Tree pruning shall be performed as approved by the Landscape Architect. E. Bermuda Sod: High quality Tifway '419' Grass Sod, freshly cut, stacked on pallets, fully rooted with soil intact. Cut sod no sooner than 24 hours before installation. Provide sod uniform in color leaf texture, and density, and free of weed and undesirable grass species. F. Hydromulch Seed : September 15 -March 15 Annual Rye Grass: High quality annual rye grass seed at or above 98 percent purity, delivered to the site in unopened containers, and meeting all the requirements of the Texas State Seed Law. March 16 -September 14 Sahara Bermuda Grass: High quality Sahara Bermuda grass seed at or above 98 percent purity, delivered to the site in unopened containers, and meeting all the requirements of the Texas State Seed Law. Note: If winter rye is installed in winter, Contractor shall return in spring (after March 15 but before April 15) to install Sahara Bermuda Lawn AS PART OF THIS CONTRACT. Contractor shall scalp rye and prepare soil surface by discing, etc. to insure a full stand of hydromulched Sahara Bermuda turf. Hydromulch or hydroseed slurry to be applied with the same ratios indicated herein of seed, tackifier, fertilizer, etc. The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 4 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 ,. G. Tackifier: Water-soluble binding agent to hold fiber mulch and seed in place. Hydro- Tack, Terra-Tack, or approved equal. H. Hydromulch Fiber: Virgin wood fiber mulch colored to allow visual metering of the application. Green is preferred. Conwed, Silva-fiber, or approved equal. I. Guying and Staking Materials: 1. Tree Stakes: Ten foot length steel "T" posts -PAINTED BLACK, with post caps. 2. Ties: Rigid tie Stock Twist Brace #LP 24" as distributed by Pro-Steel, Inc. (817) 572-4959. J. Tree Paint: Morrison Tree Seal, Cabort Tree Paint, or approved equal. K. Water: Furnished by Owner -transport as required, including supplemental watering for existing trees, reference 3.02A. L. Mulch: Provide "Grade A" shredded hardwood mulch by local vender, contractor to supply submittals. M. Steel Edging for use between all landscape beds and lawn grass: 1/8" thick, 4" deep, with vinyl trim cap, by Colmet or approved equal. Color: green. N. Filter Fabric: W' Commercial grade provided by Mirafi , 706 693 2226, or approved equal. 0 . New Mexico River Rock: 1-2" diameter supplied by local vendor, contractor to supply submittals P. Benches: Plaza Series model: PL-2 by Fairweather Site Furnishings, 800/323-1798, supplied by Owner, installed by Contractor. Q . Picnic tables: Model F-8 Table by Fairweather Site Furnishings, 800/323-1798, supplied by Owner, installed by Contractor. R. Trash Receptacle: Plaza Series model: TR-12 with optional Ash Dome, 800/323-1798, supplied by Owner, installed by Contractor. S. Brick Pavers: Pine Hall Brick or lndicot Brick as supplied by Acme Brick Company, 512/255-2573. 1. Light Duty: Color: Autumn Blend as supplied by Acme Brick . Pattern: Running bond with double soldier band. 2. Heavy Duty: Color: lndicot Manganese lronspot. Pattern: Herringbone. PART 3EXECUTION 3.01 JOB CONDITIONS AND PHASING A. Contractor shall inspect all site conditions prior to commencement of work and report any discrepancies. The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 5 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 B. Verify location of all utilities prior to pit excavation. Coordinate with General contractor for location of site utilities. If any conflicts with utilities are noted, contact Landscape Architect immediately. C. If location changes are needed for plant materials, notify Landscape Architect of requested changes at least 48 hours prior to need of changes. D. Contractor shall be responsible for the placement of the final 2" of on-site stockpiled topsoil and 2" of imported topsoil for the shaping and fine grading in all turf areas as indicated plans. Coordinate to insure that rough grade is left at least 4" lower than finished grade in lawn areas. Coordinate grading in all planting areas. 3.04 BRICK PAVERS A. Install brick pavers as shown on plans, per details and manufacturer's recommendations for installation. Contractor shall provide a 5' x 5' mock-up for all paver types showing color and pattern for approval by Landscape Architect prior to construction . 3.05 PREPARATION A. Soil Preparation: 1. Bed Preparation: a. Groundcover Areas -Install 1 O" of prepared soil mix (backfill). b. Shrub Beds -Install 16" of prepared soil mix (backfill). c. Tree and Shrub Pit Dimensions - 3.06 PLANT INSTALLATION Depth: 1 Yi times the rootball (vertical sides). Width: 2 times the diameter of the rootball. A. Planting of Trees : 1. Removal of containers: a. Remove top 1/3 of burlap from balled and burlapped materials after setting plant. b. Remove all plastic containers, ropes , and wires. 2. Backfill all trees with specified backfill mix. 3. All trees shall be set upright and plumb in center of hole and level with finished grade upon completion of planting. 4. Backfill pits immediately upon setting until hole or trench in one-half full. Hole should then be filled with water and tamped sufficiently to remove any air pockets. 5. Complete backfilling operations. Spread minimum three-inch deep specified mulch over entire tree basin. The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 6 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 6. Staking and Guying: Complete staking of all trees immediately after planting. Paint stakes, install caps and guying. Install stakes plumb and as indicated on drawings. B. Planting of shrubs, ground covers and annuals: 1. Install plants in straight rows using triangular spacing as indicated on plant list. 2. Backfill all plants with specified backfill mix. 3. Water plantings thoroughly after installation. Repair settling of plants or finished grade that occurs. 4. Install steel edging with vinyl trim cap between all shrub and lawn areas, unless indicated otherwise on drawings. 5. Install shredded hardwood mulch to full three-inch depth over entire bed area. 3.06 HYDROMULCH INSTALLATION: A. Preparation: 1. Remove trash, stick, roots, rubbish, and extraneous matter. 2. Install 2" of on-site stockpiled topsoil and 2" of imported topsoil to a total topsoil depth of 4" and grade area to insure positive drainage. 3. Grade all areas to a smooth, free draining and even surface with a loose, uniformly fine texture. 4. Limit preparation to areas that will be immediately seeded. B. Installation: 1. Use a hydromulcher (sprayer) and apply the mixture in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 2. Hydromulch as follows to ensure complete coverage as noted: Sahara Bermuda -4 lbs. Per 1,000 square feet Annual Rye -8 lbs. Per 1,000 square feet 3. Hydromulch all lawn areas with in the limits of construction. 4. Hydromulch shall be applied in a uniform cover. 5. Remove and clean immediately all hydromulch from trees, shrubs, curbs, pavement, fire hydrants, light poles, and other site improvements. Note: If winter rye is installed in winter; Contractor shall return in spring (after March 15 but before April 15) to install Sahara Bermuda Lawn AS PART OF THIS CONTRACT. Contractor shall scalp rye and prepare soil surface by disking, etc. to insure a full stand of The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 7 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 hydromulched Sahara Bermuda turf. Hydromulch or hydroseed slurry to be applied with the same ratios indicated herein of seed, tackifier, fertilizer, etc. 3.07 SOLID SOD A. Preparation: 1. Remove trash, sticks, roots, rubbish, and extraneous matter. 1. Install 2" of on-site stockpiled topsoil and 2" of imported topsoil to a total topsoil depth of 4". Grade lawn areas to smooth, free draining, and even surface with a loose, uniformly fine texture. Roll and rake, remove ridges, and fill depressions as required to drain. 2. Apply organic fertilizer (8-2-4) at a rate equal to ten pounds per 1,000 square feet (50 lbs./acre). Apply fertilizer by mechanical rotary or drop type distributor, thoroughly and evenly incorporated with the soil to a depth of three inches by disking or other approved methods. 3. Dampen dry soil prior to sodding. B. Installation: 1. Lay sod to form a solid mass with tightly filled joints. Butt ends and sides of sod strips. Do not overlay edges. Stagger strips to offset joints in adjacent courses. Remove excess sod. Sod shall be flush with adjacent curbs and sidewalks. 2. Do not lay dormant sod or install sod on saturated or frozen soil. 3. Install initial row of sod in a straight line, beginning at bottom of slopes, perpendicular to direction of the slopped area. Place subsequent rows parallel to the previously installed row. 4 . Water sod thoroughly with a fine spray immediately after laying. 5. Roll with light lawn roller to ensure contact with subgrade. PART 4PROJECT COMPLETION 4 .01 CLEAN UP A. Remove trash and debris from the site at the end of each working day. B. Broom-clean and wash down all paved areas within the Contract area, leaving the premises in a clean condition. 4.02 MAINTENANCE A. Hydromulch 1. Maintain hydromulched lawn areas until a full, uniform stand of grass, free of weeds, undesirable grass species, disease and insects is achieved and accepted by Landscape Architect. FINAL ACCEPTANCE SHALL NOT OCCUR UNTIL TWO (2) COMPLETE MOWINGS OF LAWN AREAS HAVE BEEN The Woodlands of College Station SECTION 2950 8 of 9 Landscape Planting 06/01/2006 PERFROMED. NOTIFY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OR OWNER OF MOWING DATES PRIOR TO MOWING. 2. Monitor soil moisture daily to maintain optimum growing conditions . 3. Repair, rework, and re-touch with hydromulch, all areas that have washed out, eroded, or do not grow in completely. Use topsoil to fill in any eroded or disturbed ruts prior to re-application of hydromulch. B. General 1. Maintain plant materials and lawn areas until final completion and acceptance of the project. Maintenance period shall not end until Final Acceptance letter is received by Landscape Contractor from Landscape Architect. 2. Correct defective work as soon as apparent. Maintenance shall include, but not be limited to, watering, weeding , mowing, cultivating, pruning, fertilizing , mulching, removal of dead wood, restaking, restoring planting saucers, resetting plants to proper grade, and tightening guy wires on tree stakes. 3. 60-Day Maintenance Period : After receipt of final completion and acceptance, Landscape Contractor shall maintain the project for an additional 60 days as part of this scope of work. Maintenance shall include, but not limited to the following: monitoring the irrigation system, weeding , cultivating , pruning , mowing, restaking and adjustment of stakes and guy wires, restoration of plant and tree wells, and litter removal in bed areas and lawns. 4. Upon termination of 60-day maintenance period, Landscape Contractor shall notify the Landscape Architect of request for a final inspection. At this time all defective work shall be corrected by Landscape Contractor and 1 year guarantee period shall begin. 5. Submit to the Owner, as part of this contract, a bid for a two-year maintenance program that includes an outline and schedule of activities. If accepted, this shall commence at the end of the 60-day maintenance period above. 4.03 EXPIRATION OF GUARANTEE PERIOD A. Contractor shall notify Owner or Landscape Architect in writing , 30 days prior to the expiration of the one-year guarantee period. A site inspection will be made by the Landscape Architect to verify that all work and materials are in good and healthy condition and that all tree stakes have been removed. All work and materials that are determined by the Landscape Architect to be unacceptable or dead shall be replaced at the Contractor's expense. Upon completion of replacement of all unacceptable work or dead materials, the Landscape Architect will notify the Owner of the guarantee expiration.
