Zoning District: Subdistrict NG-1, Historical Northgate Location: 317 Church Avenue Item Summary: Jin's Chinese Restaurant is preparing to open in the lease space once occupied by Ambar Indian Restaurant. The case today involves replacing the existing Ambar attached signage. The applicant is proposing to use the same maroon/red and cream colors on the store front sign that were previously used by the prior restaurant. The non-lighted sign will be made out of acrylic materials. The applicant also wishes to replace the face of the 61" x 49" lighted sign located on the side of the building. Maroon and green are the colors that are proposed for this sign. Item Background: The existing signage, used by Ambar Indian Restaurant, was approved by the Northgate Revitalization Board in May 1999. Issues/Items for Review: The design guidelines list the following items to consider during the design review process. Sign Regulations • Attached signs only Signs Encouraged • Icon or graphic signs • Window signs (not covering more than 33% of the window area) • Flush mounted signs Sign Design and Placement • Should relate in placement and size to other building elements • Should not obscure other building elements • Material, style, and color should compliment building facade • Individual shop signs in a single storefront should relate to each other in design, size, color, placement on building, and lettering style • Wood or metal is recommended • Illuminated plastic is strongly discouraged • Letters exceeding 14" in height discouraged in pedestrian-oriented areas
