SUBJECT: Velvet Rabbit- proposal for the addition of three building signs located in
Northgate at 100 Church Avenue. (Case file #99-Ai-9) Vo a
An NRB Review Subcommittee meeting was held on May 5, 1999, to review the above-
mentioned item. Don Anz, representing Ms. Jean Greenwood, presented photos and a sample
of the proposed signs. Mr. Anz stated that one sign was already made. The signs made of
plywood and wood, included a natural tan-colored border and letters, on a green background.
He requested that she be allowed to put one sign on the back of the building, one on the side,
and one on the front.
Wayne Rife voiced his concern with how well the wood would weather over time. He stated
that if allowed to use wood for the signs, the problem of enforcement would arise if the signs
became an eyesore. Richard Benning suggested having the applicant use marine plywood
instead because it weathers better than normal plywood.
The subcommittee discussed the possibility that by sealing the sign well and painting the edges
for added protection against water, the plywood sign could be located under the front facing
and should be okay.
Elton Abbot, Jr., suggested that the signs be centered over the windows and doors on all sides.
Wayne Rife motioned to approve the request for the three signs with the following conditions:
That the existing sign constructed of plywood, be placed in the front of the
building under the facing, with the added protection of extra sealing and
painting on the sides of the sign;
THE VELVET RABBIT

That the other two proposed signs be made of marine plywood to minimize
deterioration and be sealed and painted in the same manner as the first sign;
and,
That all the signs be centered over the windows and doors.
Leslie Randolph seconded, and the motion passed 7-0.
