SPECIFICATION FOR CONCRETE PARKING AREAS

1. SCOPE OF WORK
5. FINISHING

.
5.1 AFTER CONC~ETE HAS BEEN STRUCK OFF AND CON-
SOLIDATED, A BULLFLOAT MAY BE USED TO REMOVE ANY
HIGH OR LOW SPOTS. BULLFLOAT USE SHALL BE CONFINED
TO A MINIMUM. A FINAL SKID-RESISTANT FINISH SHALL BE
MADE WITH A BURLAP DRAG OR BROOM.
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL FURNISH ALL LABOR, MATERIALS,
FORMWORK, EQUIPMENT, AND SERVICES REQUIRED TO
COMPLETE ALL THE CONCRETE PARKING AREA WORK SHOWN
THE DRAWINGS AND SPECIFIED HEREIN, INCLUDING
SIDHJALKS, CONCRETE PAVEMENTS, RAMPS, AND CURBS.
2. MATERIALS
6. CURING
2.1 UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, ALL MATERIALS SHALL
CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
6.1 CONCRETE SHALL BE CURED BY PROTECTING IT FROM
LOSS OF MOISTURE, RAPID TEMPERATURE CHANGE, AND MECH-
ANICAL INJURY FOR AT LEAST THREE DAYS AFTER PLACEMENT.
AFTER ALL FREE WATER HAS DISAPPEARED FROM THE SURFACE.
A LIQUID MEMBRANE-FORMING COMPOUND OR OTHER APPROVED
CURING MATERIAL SHALL BE UNIFORMLY SPRAYED ON ALL EX-
POSED SURFACES. RATE OF APPLICATION SHALL BE IN
ACCORDANCE WITH MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS.

BLENDED HYDRAULIC CEMENTS, ASTM C595.
CEMENT SHALL CORRESPOND TO THAT CEMENT ON
WHICH THE SELECTION OF CONCRETE PROPORTIONS
WAS BASED.

2.1.2. CONCRETE AGGREGATES SHALL CONFORM TO THE
LATEST REVISED STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR CONCRETE
AGGREGATES, ASTM C33. MAXIMUM COARSE AGGREGATE SIZE
SHALL BE NOT MORE THAN ONE-FOURTH THE SLAB THICKNESS.
7. JOINTS
2.1.3. ALL MIXING WATER SHALL BE CLEAN AND FREE FROM
DELETERIOUS AMOUNTS OF ACIDS, ALKALIES, OR ORGANIC
MATERIALS.
7.1 JOINTING SHALL CONFORM TO THE ATTACHED JOINTING
PLAN - SOUTHLAND FIELD REP TO BE NOTIFIED PRIOR TO ANY
CHANGES.
2.1.4. EXPANSION-JOINT MATERIAL WHERE REQUIRED SHALL
BE ~-IN.-THICK ASPHALT-IMPREGNATED PREMOLDED FIBER
CONFORMING TO THE LATEST REVISED STANDARD SPECIFICA-
TION FOR PERFORMED EXPANSION JOINT FILLER FOR
CONCRETE, ASTM D1752.
2.1.5. CURING COMPOUND SHALL CONFORM TO THE LATEST
REVISED STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR LIQUID MEMBRANE-
I FORMING COMPOUNDS FOR CURING CONCRETE, ASTM C309.
VERIFY TYPE OF COMPOUND WITH SOUTHLAND REPRESENTATIVE
PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT OF WORK.
7.2 CONTROL JOINTS OR CONTRACTION JOINTS SHALL BE
FORMED BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS: SAi.JING, FORM-
ING BY HAND, FORMING BY PREMOLDED FILLER, OR USING
FULL DEPTH CONSTRUCTION JOINTS. JOINT DEPTH SHALL BE
A MINIMUM OF ONE-FOURTH THE SLAB THICKNESS. HAND-
FORMED JOINTS SHALL HAVE A MAXIMUM EDGE RADIUS OF
~ IN. SAWING OF JOINTS SHALL BEGIN AS SOON AS THE
CONCRETE HAS HARDENED SUFFICIENTLY TO PERMIT SAWING
WITHOUT EXCESSIVE RAVELING. ALL JOINTS SHALL BE
COMPLETED BEFORE UNCONTROLLED SHRINKAGE CRACKING
OCCURS. JOINTS SHALL BE CONTINUOUS ACROSS THE SLAB,
UNLESS INTERRUPTED BY FULL DEPTH PREMOLDED JOINT
FILLER. JOINTS SHALL EXTEND COMPLETELY THROUGH THE
CURB. JOINT OPENINGS WIDER THAN ~ IN. SHALL BE
CLEANED AND SEALED BEFORE OPENING PARKING AREA TO
TRAFFIC.

FILLER FOR THE FULL DEPTH OF THE SLAB.

2.2 UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, ALL CONCRETE SHALL
CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:
2.2.1. ALL CONCRETE SHALL HAVE A MINIMUM 28-DAY
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 4000 PSI. CONCRETE SHALL
BE MANUFACTURED AND DELIVERED IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE LATEST REVISED STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR READY
MIXED CONCRETE, ASTM C94.

7.6 LAY OUT JOINTS TO FORM SQUARE PANELS. WHEN
THIS IS NOT PRACTICAL, RECTANGULAR PANELS CAN BE USED
IF THE LONG DIMENSION IS NO MORE THAN 1~ TIMES THE
SHORT, E.G. 8x12 FT.

MINIHUM CEMENT CONTENT OF 520 LB. PER CUBIC YARD.
ALL OTHER LONE STAR DIVISION CITIES.

7.7 JOINTS SHOULD RUN CONTINUOUSLY AND EXTEND
THROUGH INTEG&\L CURBS. JOINTS CAN BE TERMINATED
AND OFFSET AT ISOLATION JOINTS.
7.8 ADJUST JOINTING LAYOUT FOR THE LOCATION OF MAN-
HOLES, CATCH BASINS, S~~LL FOUNDATIONS. AND OTHER
BUILT-IN STRUCTURES SO THAT THE JOINTS WILL LINE UP
WITH THE CORNERS OF THE STRUCTURES.
2.2.4. TANK PAD AREA SHALL BE 5" REINFORCED CONCRETE
iHTH 113 REBAR 16" O.C. ALL STEEL TO BE SET ON 1~"
PLASTIC HIGH CHAIRS.
7.9 OFFSET CONTROL JOINTS TO AVOID ACUTE ANGLES
OR Sl-1ALL PIECES OF SLAB AT CURVES. OFFSETS SHOULD BE
AT LEAST 13z FT.

8. OPENING TO TRAFFIC
8.1 THE PAVEMENT SHALL BE CLOSED TO PASSENGER
CAR TRAFFIC FOR AT LEAST THREE FULL DAYS OR UNTIL
SUCH TIME THAT THE MINIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF
THE CONCRETE IS AT LEAST 75% OF ITS DESIGN STRENGTH.
T&\FFIC SHALL BE RESTRICTED TO PASSENGER CARS AND
LIGHT TRUCKS FOR AT LEAST SEVEN DAYS AFTER CONCRETE
IS PLACED. IN ALL CASES APPROVAL SHALL BE OBTAINED
PRIOR TO OPENING OF THE PAVEMENT TO TRAFFIC.

9. Sfu~PLING AND TESTING
9.1 IF 4SPECIFIED BY SOUTHLAND THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
FURNISH FOR TEST AND ANALYSIS REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLES
OF THE MATERIALS TO BE USED IN THE WORK.
ALSO IF SPECIFIED BY SOUTHLAND, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
PROVIDE CERTIFICATION THAT MATERIAL FURNISHED IS IN
ACCORDANCE iHTH THESE SPECIFICATIONS. SAMPLING AND
3ESTING SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LATEST
REVISIONS OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGH-
WAY AND TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS (AASHTO) OR THE
fu~ERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS (ASTM)
