CODE RANGER PROGRAM
Become a Code Ranger and help reinvigorate neighborhoods by attending the
upcoming training class being held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. For more information, and to
register for the upcoming class, contact Field Operations Manager, Michael Thomas at
code@arlingtontx.gov or by telephone at 817-459-6777.
The City of Arlington Code Ranger program was
implemented in January 2007, and designed to foster civic
engagement by encouraging citizen connectedness to their
neighborhood and city government via hands-on
participation. This initiative offers citizens the opportunity
to directly partner with city staff by identification of
deteriorating neighborhood conditions and thereby
improving their neighborhood's integrity. The Code Ranger
program serves as an effective and efficient catalyst to
strengthen the bond between citizens and code compliance
staff, and a key component to make Arlington more safe,
strong and attractive.

Code Ranger Feedback
The Community Services Code Compliance Division is continually working to strengthen its
partnership with the community. We are requesting Code Rangers to take 2 to 3 minutes to
complete an evaluation of the program to help ensure that we provide excellent service and a
positive experience for Code Rangers.

CODE
RANGER
PROGRAM
Mission of the Code Ranger Program
To promote healthy neighborhoods through
connecting the community to city
resources in an effort to establish and
grow positive relationships between the
citizens and Community Services.
Key Components of
the Code Ranger Program
Code Ranger participants will be trained in the
most common code enforcement violations in
order for citizens to accurately recognize and
report violations to Community Services. Code
Ranger participants will have an opportunity to
build a relationship with their district code officer.
This effort will encourage and strengthen a
spirit of volunteerism which will allow the city
and the citizens to work together to grow
strong, safe, responsible neighborhoods. This
will be accomplished through:
• Training classes taught by code enforcement
staff and held in conjunction with the
Neighborhood Academy, Neighborhood
Summit, and Citizen on Patrol Training
• Special email access to the district inspector
to report violations
• Individual response to Code Rangers on all
violations reported through the program
• Invitations to quarterly meetings to meet
other Code Ranger participants and key
staff members
When you report a concern, we can
assist you better if you provide the
street address of the code violation.
To report a violation, call 817-459-6777
or email code@arlingtontx.gov.
Common Code Violations
The City of Arlington codes are intended to benefit everyone while making our neighborhoods
safe, strong and attractive. Compliance with standards can reduce vandalism, deter crime,
maintain property values and prevent deterioration of your neighborhood.
Weeds and Grass
Weeds and grass over 12 inches in height is a violation.
Property owners are responsible for keeping their lawns
mowed to the roadway. Amendments to the Nuisance
Ordinance address unsafe landscaping
affected by disease, death or damage
including trees, bushes, shrubs, vines,
brush and ground cover. Edging to
help prevent infrastructure damage is
required.
Junk and Nuisance Vehicles
Any vehicle which is visible from
private or public view that is
inoperable for 30 days, wrecked or
dismantled, and is not registered or
licensed is considered a junk vehicle.
This includes all-terrain vehicles, boats
or personal watercraft vehicles.
Restrictions for vehicles on jacks, vehicles with flat tires and
vehicles used for storage have increased.
Parking of Vehicles
Cars, boats and recreational vehicles
must be parked on an asphalt or
concrete surface in the front or side
yard of a property.
Unclean Premises
Properties should be kept free of
unsightly accumulation of litter,
garbage, and/or junk which is likely to
become unsanitary, offensive or likely
to create disease. This includes
unsanitary water on the ground or in a vessel, areas that
harbor rodents or parasitic insects or promote mosquito
breeding, or any condition offensive to a person of ordinary
sensibilities due to objectionable odors or accumulation of
waste and fecal matter.
Graffiti
Graffiti makes neighborhoods and
commercial areas look unattractive
and affects property values, business
sales and the community's image.
Report graffiti immediately to help
make neighborhoods safer, stronger and more attractive. For
free, prompt graffiti removal, submit a "Graffiti Consent to
Remove" form.
Dilapidated Fence
A fence in a dilapidated state is
considered a nuisance. This includes
fences that have deteriorated and/or
missing structural members, is in an
improper state of repair that causes a
safety or health concern, are improperly positioned or is
unsafe and deleterious to the livability of a neighborhood.
Outside Storage
Indoor furniture, appliances, machines,
tools, cartons, and lawn maintenance
equipment is prohibited from being
stored outside. This also includes any
used, deteriorated or discarded building
materials, barrels, casks, boxes or auto
parts. Firewood must be stacked 12" off the ground.
Illegal Signs
Signs are not permitted on utility
poles or medians. Signs must be
posted behind sidewalks and are not
allowed within ten (10) feet of the
edge of the curb.
Trash Placed Out Too Early
Trash and trash receptacles may not be
placed out prior to 7:00 p.m. the day
before collection or after 7:00 a.m. the
day of collection. Free curbside
collection of bulk waste including
furniture and other large household items is available by
calling 817-317-2000.
Stagnant Water
Oversized Vehicles
Vehicles exceeding 30 feet in length,
or eight (8) feet in height and have a
carrying capacity of greater than
4,000 pounds are not permitted to be
parked in residential areas.
Stagnant pool water can pose serious
health risks. Report standing, stagnant
water immediately. Swimming pool
water being drained should be released
into the sanitary sewer system, not into
the storm drains. Be sure to remove
standing water from your property to help avoid mosquito
infestation.
