It is always fun to be with the students and to see their response to this important program. I guess I was expecting, in addition to the health/safety emphasis, to highlight the City's part in this project & to celebrate the cooperation between the City & School District. I know that Marc (although very gracious as you indicated) was interested in raising the awareness of the link from this project to their "safe routes to school" program ... If notes on these points could be added to the file for next year I'd appreciate it. Also, if you could let me know as you start your planning for the '04 version of this, so that some of the last minute attendance issues regarding the CSISD Board members could be covered ... Was the media aware of the event? Was Becky Nugent involved in the media interaction? It was a disappointment that there wasn't better coverage ... Was the EAGLE there? Maybe a Press Release could be developed and passed on to the media as an after thought. I'd be very interested in getting copies of all the digital photos you took ... maybe on disk or CD? Thanks again for the work on the event ... jlm James Massey Phone: (979) 845-8661 FAX: (979) 458-2069 -----Original Message----- Page 1 I -· .... He knows Debbie Huston and will have a grand daughter attending College Hills next year. Diann had given Deb Huston the program that included recognition of City and School District officials. Why she didn't is a mystery. She may have just been anxious to get the children fed. Dr. Cholupka commented that we should have more of these type of city/school district events. Thank you for attending. There were 451 parents and children that attended and 6 dogs. I enjoy publ ic speaking and certainly what I do in the area of health and fitness. Let me know if you need me in the future to speak to other groups that may have an interest in similar topics. THanks. Martha Brennan »>"Diann Strom" <Dstrom@cstx.gov> 09/24/03 13:47 PM»> Ms. Brennan, Hi! Your name was given to me as a possible speaker for the City of College Station's Walk Your Little Texan to School Day on October 8th. We'd like you to speak to the children of College Hills Elementary School about the importance of health and fitness. Walk to School Day is an annual event that encourages children to walk, rather than be driven, to school. The event encourages children to exercise daily through walking. In addition, it reduces the number of cars going to and from schools. The day starts with the children meeting up at 7:15 a.m. at Thomas Park and start the walk around 7:40 a.m. The group should arrive at 8 a.m. and meet with other students for a pep rally at 8 a.m. We'd like you to speak at this time, however if you'd like to join us for the walk that would be great, too. Please let me know if you are interested and we can work out the details. If you have any questions, please e-mail or call me at 764-3838. Sincerely, Diann Strom College Station. Texas A&M Athletics Page 1 I ~003 Over 451 students , teachers, parents, and volunteers participated in the Walk Our Little Texas to School Day on October 8, 2003. The City of College Station, in cooperation with the College Station Independent School Districit, held the event for College Hills Elementary School for the second year. The participants meet at Thomas Park early Tuesday morning and joined together to promote walking and bicycling to school as way to exercise. College Station Police Department Bicycle Patrol Officers Paul Brown and Chris Suel escorted the procession from Thomas Park to College Hills Elementary. Upon arriving to the school the group meet for a post-walk pep rally. Students unable to participate in the event also attended. During the pep rally speakers talked to children about the importance of exercise, healthy living , and safety. Principal Debbie Hudson introduced Martha Brennan, Assistant Track and Field Coach at Texas A&M University, got the students pumped up about exercise and healthy living. College Station Police Officer Todd Van Dresar and Brando CSPD's search and rescue dog followed Brennan. Van Dresar talked to the students about the importance of being safe when walking and demonstrated some of Brando's abilities. The audience of students, teachers, parents, volunteers, school administrators, and city officials seemed to enjoy both speakers. Wednesday's event was apart of International Walk to School Day. In preparation of the event, the children were taught pedestrian and bicycle safety by CSPD Officers Ken Petereit and Paul Brown. A special thanks goes to all of the participants and volunteers. That way, we can start planning events for each school and have things ready to go by the time the students return in the Fall. I have attached some information on this event for those of you that may be unfamiliar. Last year, one elementary school participated, College Hills. Prior to the day, students were presented with bicycle and pedestrian training in their physical education classes. On the day of the event, we met at Thomas Park and walked to the school with Councilman Massey. Students carried a Walk to School Day banner for the walk and received blinking "tail lights" to wear. There was a short presentation at the school once we arrived. If you are interested in planning an event for this October, please contact me and we will put your school on our list for activities. College Hills Elementary School is serving as the lead College Station school for this exciting event. College Hills school children and their parents are invited to join us at the southwest corner of Francis Drive and James Parkway in Thomas Park at 7:20 a.m. From Thomas Park, we will walk to College Hills Elementary school as a group. Once we arrive at school, there will be a gathering in the P .E./Gymnasium Building for a special presentation. "Walk Our Little Texans to School" gives kids a chance to be more physically active, to practice safe pedestrian skills and to learn more about their environment. At the same time, the program encourages people to change their neighborhoods for the better, working together, to make walking a safe and enjoyable part of everyone's lives. To prepare College Hills children to more safely walk or ride their bikes to school, they were provided with a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Class on September 24. This special safety class was taught by the Rural Passenger Safety Division of the Texas Cooperative Extension Service and the College Station Police Department. Additionally, all students at College Hills Elementary School are provided with Risk Watch lessons throughout the school year. Risk Watch is an injury prevention program provided by the College Station Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association. Its' goal is to prevent the eight major causes of childhood injury and death: vehicle collisions, fire and burns, choking and suffocation, poisoning, falls, firearms, and bicycle, pedestrian and water-related accidents. "Walk Our Little Texans To School Day" is sponsored by the Brazos Injury Prevention Coalition; the City of College Station Fire, Greenways, Development Services and Police Departments; the Texas Cooperative Extension -Rural Passenger Safety Program; and the Texas Department of Transportation -Safe Communities Program. "A sport for the people." That is the literal translation of volkssporting. Specifically, a volkssporting event is an organized, noncom- petitive walk, bike, swim or a cross-country ski designed to appeal to everyone. The majority of volkssporting events are orga- nized walks. Volkswalks take place on marked trails with a measured distance of either five or ten kilometers (3.1 or 6.2 miles). This allows participants to exercise at their own pace. Two kinds of volkswalks are available: regular walking events, those which occur on weekends with published start and finish times, and year- round/ seasonal events, which are open any day or, in the case of seasonal events, opened during a limited time frame due to weather conditions. Not only is volkswalking good for the body and mind, but also for sociability and education. Curently there are approximately 425 volkssporting clubs in the United States. Each club offers a different schedule and frequency of events. It is safe, easy and entertaining to exercise with a walking group. Group commit- ments and walking goals keep one's motivation high and help ensure one maintains a regular exercise program .. Thousands of volkssporting events are organized every year in historical and natural areas; so enjoy the scenery with or without a group. SPONSORS: B ~ alkers Vbltsporl Club A VA 903 . . .. . LOCA'.
