I don't know that I have ever seen a curbed Bike/ped shared use path . It is not specifically addressed in
the AASHTO guide. However, under the section on Bike Lane Widths it discusses how bicyclists tend to
ride a distance of 32-40 inches from a curb face. This would reduce the effective width of the path to
approximately four feet. This is even less than the sidewalk currently shown in the plans. There is also
still the issue of the horizontal alignment.
We would have to look closely at the drainage issues caused by what you propose as it may concentrate
runoff in areas that might create a hazard to either pedestrians or vehicles.
I must not fully understand what the city hopes to accomplish with the proposed change or the reasons
behind it. Perhaps a meeting would better foster understanding than continued email back and forth.

Bob in regard to the hike and bike accommodation at Rock Prairie and Sh
6, if we notched that sidewalk and kept it a grade the median island
would incorporate curb and gutter. The curb and gutter would provide a
barrier lessening the horizontal clearance. For vehicles when utilizing
curb and gutter I think the clearance is reduced to 1.5 feet. Does it
work the same way for bicycles? Furthermore ADA ramps would not be
needed because the pedestrian facility would be at grade. If the cross
slope on Rock Prairie under the bridge is maintained drainage should not
be an issue. I am assuming there will be a slight crown at Rock
Prairie. Please let me know what you think?

Chuck,
We can do a boile rplate AFA very quickly for this item that the
district engineer can execute. The time will be for your review and
city council approval. This is an enhancement to an acceptable design
at the city's request and I think the city should fund it.
Of equal or greater concern to me as I look at the plans are the
changes that widening to ten feet and making this a shared use bike/ped
path creates complications. At the bridge columns there is currently
11 .5 feet from face of curb to face of column. A ten foot path would
leave nine inches of clearance on either side. AASHTO's "Guide for the
Development of Bicycle Facilities" recommends a minimum of three feet of
horizontal clearance and six feet is desirable. The plans indicate 13
foot
radius reverse curves at each end of the sidewalks on the turnaround
islands. The minimum horizontal curve radius should be 36 feet. We
will have to request approval of design exceptions from Austin for these
factors. The design and location of the ADA curb ramps must be modified
somehow to accommodate the additional width. The calculation of the
additional cost is not a simple calculation of additional sidewalk
because of this and because of the reduced quantities of brick pavers.
Lastly, in looking at the typical sections I see that there are
sidewalks and 5 feet of width in each direction for bike lanes. Is a

ten foot path really necessary to meet the intent of your bikeway plan?
I believe we can make this work somehow and we are willing to work with
you to do it.

Good afternoon Bob. Below is an exchange of correspondence between
the
CoCS and TxDOT about potentially modifying the width of the sidewalk
at
the Barron Road grade separation. I fully understand the fiscal
constraints on this project, and the challenges the State is facing .
However, I am concerned that both TxDOT and the CoCS will spend well
over $2,000 each in staff time to generate the paperwork and secure
the
approvals to allow the CoCS to pay for these improvements. Do we have
any options available to get this change approved without
reimbursement
from the City? Thanks, erg .

Hello Jeff,

Each Area Office of the Bryan District has been notified that there is
not any additional monies for change orders. We are looking at
different ways to cut costs in anticipation of necessary changes.
Therefore, it is not feasible at this time to approve any additional
work unless funding is secured from the CoCS.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Good morning Carlos,
I am following up from our meeting awhile back when we met and
discussed possible modifications to the sidewalks through the
interchange for the future trail system. I got with Michael Martin
and
he modified the sidewalk sheet to show a wider sidewalk, which is
attached . Michael ran some quick numbers and he estimates that by
providing 10' wide sidewalks, there would be about $2,000 in increased
construction costs based on unit bid prices. Is there any possible
way
that TxDOT can make these
changes and is TxDOT willing to fund these changes? Thanks for your
assistance on this and let me know if you have any questions.
