WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM ANALYSIS
WE RENT STORAGE
2672 HORSE HAVEN LANE
College Station, Brazos County, Texas
May 2012
INTRODUCTION:
The site is located at the intersection of Horse Haven Lane and Appomattox Drive in the Horse
Haven Subdivision. The legal description is We Rent Storage, Block 1, Lot 1 is 2.60 acres and zoned PDD.
The entire site is in the City limits and a personal storage facility is planned for the site. The Cities staff
engineer is Erika Bridges.
The proposed fire hydrants will connect to an existing 8" waterline along Horse Haven Lane.
Static pressure information was obtained from the Cities Water Division @ 764-3660 and was based on
recent flow testing of an adjacent fire hydrant and the static pressure was 112 psi.
The proposed waterline was modeled using the Haestead Methods "Watercad" program using
the "Hazen -Williams" pressure friction equation. One of the primary goals of a water distribution
system is to provide adequate capacity to fight fires. WaterCAD's automated fire flow analysis was
used to determine if the system can meet the fire flow demands while maintaining minimum pressure
constraints. In the program fire flows are computed by iteratively assigning demands and computing
system pressures. The model assigns the fire flow demand to a node and checks the model, checking
to see if all pressure constraints are met at that demand. Scenarios were prepared placing fire flow
demands at each proposed fire hydrant and the peak hourly demand generated by the proposed small
office was added to the fire flow demand. The results of the analysis have been included in this
report.
INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE (IFC):
International Buidling Code (IBC) type I non-combustabile light gage steel construction, largest
building is 6217 square feet, non -sprinkled. IFC minimum fire flow is 1500 gal/min for 2 hours.
ANALYSIS REQUIREMENTS/CONSTRAINTS
-PVC water line pipe with a roughness coefficient of 150
-Fire flows of 1500 gpm (750 gpm between two adjacent fire hydrants)
-Minimum residual pressures at 20 p.s.i.
-Minimum static pressure of 35 p.s.i.
-Maximum velocity of 12 fps.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion the proposed system can provide a fireflow demand of 1500 gpm as required
and maintain a residual pressure greater than 20 psi.
