PROJECT: SUBJECT: MESSAGE: February 23, 2011 Data Code: -406 LAN modeled a small section of the City's water system in the neighborhood south west of the Carters Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to determine the pressures related to the required fire flow for the proposed Lab and SCADA building. Based on the type of structure as defined in the 2006 IBC (Type 1113, structural steel frame enclosed in gypsum board, 1 hour rated) and the square footage of the building (2,994 square feet) the minimum required fire flow is 1,500 gpm for two hours. The City of College Station conducted two fire flow tests on February 14, 2011. These test results are attached in the Appendix. Using the results from these fire flow tests, LAN calibrated a model for the small portion of the City's water system from which the extended water main is to be attached. Hazen Williams "C" factors for the existing pipes were varied until the pressure drop and static pressure conditions observed in the fire flow tests were approximated by the model. LAN then modeled the system with both a 6 and 8 inch mains extending to the fire hydrant at the proposed Lab and SCADA building to determine the pressure in the system during fire flow. It was determined that the pressure would be approximately 64 psi when a new 8 inch main was extended from the existing 6 inch line past Rolling Rock Place, assuming the pressures in the supply lines were similar to the pressures at the time of the fire flow tests. This is greater than the 20 psi pressure required during fire flow as mandated by state regulations (30 TAC §290.44(d)). It is assumed that since the main is being extended across country, and that since the only road being paralleled is within the plant confines, the requirements for minimum hydrant spacing are not applicable; however, the distance from the hydrant at new Lab and SCADA Building to the point at which the new main crosses the plant road is approximately 420 ft, which is less than the minimum distance required by code.
