MEMORANDUM
December 17, 2007
TO: Grant Barnby, Wakefield Signs, via wakefield(asignsourcetx.com
FROM: Jason Schubert, Staff Planner
SUBJECT: CARINO'S ITALIAN GRILL (DRB)
Staff reviewed the above-mentioned application as requested. The following is a list of staff
review comments detailing items that need to be addressed. If all comments have been
addressed and the following information submitted by Monday, December 31, 2007, 10:00 a.m.,
your project will be placed on the next available Design Review Board (DRB) meeting on Friday,
January 11, 2007, 11:00 a.m. in the City Hall Administrative Conference Room, 1101 Texas
Avenue:
Color samples for the proposed signs.
Ten (10) copies of revised sign details. It appears that the sign details provided
are the same as those provided for the August 24th DRB meeting. It is Staff's
understanding that the color number (PMS-141) was not equivalent to the color
provided on the sign details (Gold Satin Finish). Please provided revised the
sign details and/or explain the discrepancy between the sign details/color sample
and the color installed on the now existing sign.
If all information is submitted and satisfactory, the agenda and staff report for your project can
be accessed at the following web site on Tuesday the week before the DRB meeting.

To clarify the staffs concerns as stated in the December 17th memorandum pertaining to
the existing colors of the Carino's signage...
The submitted sign details for the new DRB meeting are the same as presented at the
August 24th DRB meeting. The reason for the resubmission is due to the color samples
inaccuracy.
The discrepancy in the coloring came because we submitted digitally printed samples of
the colors based on the correct PMS color, which varied from the actual painted colors
used on the signage. The actual colors used matched the PMS color numbers as specified,
but the printed samples we submitted were inaccurate.
Thus we are now submitting for approval the actual color chips for review.

STAFF REPORT
Project Manager: Jason Schubert, Staff Planner Report Date: January 2, 2008

For
CARINO'S ITALIAN GRILL (DRB) (07-00500321)
Item: Presentation, possible action and discussion regarding sign details for Carino's Italian Grill
located at 620 Harvey Road in the Wolf Pen Creek Zoning District.
Applicant: Grant Barnby, Wakefield Signs
Item Summary: Signs proposed in the Wolf Pen Creek zoning district must receive DRB
approval and a sign permit to be installed. At the August 24th Design Review Board meeting,
the applicant received approval for their request to replace the signage for the restaurant. After
the signs were installed, Staff observed a discrepancy between the proposed and installed
signs. This discrepancy involved the main background color, PMS-141, which appeared to be a
brighter yellow than the gold-like color provided in the sign details and color sample (see
pictures). As provided in the attachment, the applicant states that the discrepancy came
because they "submitted digitally printed samples of the colors based on the correct PMS color,
which varied from the actual painted colors used on the signage. The actual colors used
matched the PMS color numbers as specified, but the printed samples we submitted were
inaccurate."
The applicant has brought this item forward to have the sign and colors approved as installed.
Yellow and red color combinations in signs have consistently been a concern of the Design
Review Board in the past for Wolf Pen Creek sign proposals such as Office Max, Sonic, Rudy's
Texas Bar-B-Q, and Cavender's Boot City.
Issues/Items for Review:
1. Signage
• Design
• Scale and proportion
• Colors, materials, and lighting
• Compatible with adjacent signs
• Corporate signs

DRB Minutes — January 11, 2008
AGENDA ITEM NO. 5: Presentation, possible action, and discussion regarding
sign details for Carino's Italian Grill located at 620 Harvey Road in the Wolf Pen
Creek Zoning District. Case #07-00500321 (JS)
Jason Schubert, Staff Planner, presented the item stating that this item had come
before the Design Review Board on August 24th wherein the Applicant received
approval for their request to replace the signage and the details thereto for a restaurant
located at 620 Harvey Road in the Wolf Pen Creek Zoning District. He further explained
that Staff observed a discrepancy between the proposed and installed signs, involving
the main background color, PMS-141, which appeared to be a brighter yellow than the
gold color originally provided by the Applicant and the Applicant has resubmitted this
item to have the sign and colors approved as installed.
Grant Barnby of Wakefield Signs, Applicant, answered questions in general from the
Board Members, particularly the inaccuracy of the digitally printed samples of the colors
presented to the Design Review Board versus the actual painted colors used on the
sign.
Ward Wells expressed the need to inform staff that the color difference does happen
quite frequently and requested that future applicants present samples of the material
instead of digitally printed color samples. Nancy Sawtelle concurred.
Ward Wells motioned to approve the sign and colors as built for Carino's Italian Grill
located at 620 Harvey Road located in the Wolf Pen Creek Zoning District. Alan King
seconded, motioned passed (4-0).
